Trace Adkins Performs Song On Stage To Express His Feelings About The Nation Anthem Protests
By jadeSaxworth

After NFL players decided to kneel for the national anthem, cases of anti-patriotism popped up all over the United States. Soon, students in elementary school to high school were voicing their opinions by way of sitting out some of the country’s most traditional patriotic customs. And while some have sided with these acts, stating that it is their right to express their opinions, others, such as country singer, Trace Adkins, have decided to share their own thoughts on the lack of patriotism.
After several cases of athletes and other Americans protesting things that they didn’t approve of, Trace Adkins decided to share his thoughts on the situation. On October 4th, Adkins took the stage at the Grand Ole Opry and decided to sing his feeling out about the topic. Instead of going on a political rant, Adkins belted out the song “Still a Soldier,” and the rest was history.
The lyrics, “he’ll stand up when he hears the anthem and that will never change because he’s still a soldier,” were enough to make the audience at the Grand Ole Opry cheer Adkins on.
“The stage is not the place for a political rant about your political views,” Trace told Rare Country in a recent interview. “I’m not going to subject people to that.”

You can almost feel the power in the room when Adkins sings the song.
“Every time I sing that lyric live, people sing it louder than you would believe,” he said. “Whenever I sing it, I think about that guy watching football on a Sunday afternoon who has to struggle to get up on his feet through the pain of arthritis, or because he uses prosthetics. I always have that vision in my head.”
In addition to his powerful patriotic lyrics, Adkins is known for bringing veterans onstage.
“I want to give them an opportunity to come up on the stage and have the audience honor them,” he said. “I’ve always wanted it to be about them — the veterans.”
While Adkins doesn’t want to claim that he has an influence on pop culture, he does believe that the song “Still a Soldier,” came out at the right time.
“I’m not going to claim to have some influence on pop culture,” laughed Trace. “But when we cut this song in the studio, we just looked at each other and knew we had something special. With all the stuff in the news lately, it makes the song especially timely and poignant.”
Some of the other powerful lyrics in the song are…
“He’s put away his gun and boots but he still believes in the American dream.”
He goes on to describe what it’s like for a soldier to see the places he’s been on the news and how a part of him dies when a brother falls. And if they needed him again he’d be back on that plane and his blood will always run red, white and blue.
Commenters shared their love of Adkins and the song…
“Awesome job on that song. Once a soldier always a soldier.”
“Love Trace Adkins for his talent and his patriotic attitude.
