Young Man Working At Grocery Store Doesn't Know He's Being Watched, But His Story Is Going Viral Everywhere

Today’s youth have a bad rap. They are often criticized for being self-centered and showing signs of entitlement. Others have criticized for their lack of manners and the fact that they spend far too much time on their phones.
When Jennifer Christopher Coker was shopping at the Tifton, Georgia Publix, she learned that the stereotype of today’s youth may not be all that accurate. As she was pushing her cart down an aisle of the very busy store, she overheard an elderly man ask a young clerk a question. The disabled man asked the employee if he was busy. The young man, known as Roger, not only responded with a smile but he also went on to tell the man he was not busy and asked if he needed help.
Coker didn’t think much about it at the time until she happened to run into Roger and the elderly gentleman in another aisle. Evidently, the elderly man was worried that it would take him a long time to gather all of his groceries and he wanted to know if Roger could help him. Much to Coker’s surprise, she saw Roger walking down each and every aisle with the man, while checking off items on his list and filling his cart. The store was extremely busy and Roger clearly had other duties to fulfill, but he took the time to help out this one man, surely making a difference in this man’s day.
Coker managed to capture a photo of the two of the them and she shared the feel-good moment on Facebook alongside the following comment…
“There was no agitation in his tone for being interrupted. There was no rush to his walk to make the man feel like he was a burden.”
The positive post went viral and is still going strong a year later.
Coker felt such gratitude for Roger’s kindness and was very happy to see that his parents raised him right.
“It is so rare to see such a young person have such respect for his elders. I had tears knowing that the elderly gentleman was probably happy to have someone help him AND to listen to him. You don’t get this kind of service at just any grocery store but Publix, specifically the Publix in Tifton, Ga.”
Commenters shared their thoughts on the kindness that Roger exhibited, and they also praised Publix for hiring such high-quality employees…
“My experience with Publix is that they instill/encourage this type of behavior. And I agree with other comments that parents have done a great job in raising these young people. I lived in FL for a few years and shopped only at Publix. I was pleased to see that they hired folks with special needs. There was one young man, in particular, that was in charge of carts in the lot. I always noticed how pleasant and efficient he went about his job, and complimented him. One day I went back into the store and asked for a manager to commend this employee. I was thanked for the feedback and told that the employee would receive kudos and a free lunch. The manager also suggested that I visit Publix website and commend this employee who would then receive a thank you letter from their HQ. I hope he got it!”
