At 279-feet high, the newly opened Charles Kuonen Suspension Bridge in Switzerland is already terrifying potential walkers. Spanning a mountainous gap of more than 1621 feet, the bridge has officially broken the world record for the longest pedestrian suspension bridge, Zermatt Tourism reports. While hikers brave enough to cross it get superb views of Matterhorn, Weisshorn and Bernese Alps, you have to have the heart of a lion to attempt the bridge. While most average people balk at the chance to walk this terrifying bridge, the director of Zermatt Tourism, Daniel Luggen, an adventurer, could not wait to give it a shot.
“How often do you get the chance to cross a real world record suspension bridge?” Daniel Luggen said at the bridge’s inauguration on July 29. “The thrill experienced high over the precipice is indescribable.”
The previous bridge was broken by falling rocks. This one has replaced it and is named after its primary sponsor, a renown Swiss psychologist and co-owner of a Swiss winery.
The bridge, which is about a third of a mile long, bridges the valley between the Swiss towns of Zermatt and Grächen.
If a person was trying to walk across the valley on the ground, it would take about three or four hours. But the bridge cuts the journey down to about 10 minutes – unless you inch along terrified for your life.
The bridge was made higher than the last one that got crushed by a rockslide. Now that won’t happen to this one, but the height could give vertigo to fearful climbers.
Anyone afraid of heights, should certainly avoid the Charles Kuonen Suspension Bridge. They should for an alternative way to get between the two towns on either side of the valley.
“People who have problems with a fear of heights, they have to close their eyes, or have someone to walk just behind,” Zweifel said.
The bridge cost about $775,000 to build. And the designers cut costs by using certain materials that might leave people with a fear of heights quaking in their boots. For example, half a kilometer of the bridge must be crossed over grating. That means you can look down and see the terrible fall below.
Back in 2014, Russia built a long “footbridge in the sky” to make the Sochi SkyPark more attractive. It was described as the “world’s longest walkway” and included two observation platforms that gave walkers a view of mountains and the Black Sea coast. The true adventurers who walked the bridge could also bungee jump at the center deck. Now that Russian bridge no longer holds the record as this Swiss one is longer – much longer.
