Girl Dies In Car Crash, Dad Disturbed By What Came In The Mail Months Later

A Tennessee family is grieving the loss of their 17-year-old daughter who died in a car crash after hitting a guardrail on the local interstate. Unfortunately, things have only gotten worse since the accident, and her father was recently left disturbed by what he got in the mail a few months later.
Hannah Eimers died in November of 2016 while driving in her father’s Volvo. According to reports, something caused her car to drift too close to the center median, and soon, her vehicle slammed into a guardrail, killing her in the process.

As Mail Online explains, the “Lindsay X-LITE” guardrail was supposed to “collapse like a telescope” when it’s hit by a car, but that’s not exactly what happened. Instead, the rail remained firm and penetrated the car, right toward Hannah.
As a result, the teen had been struck in the head and chest, ultimately propelling her into the backseat. She died instantly upon impact. Of course, Hannah’s father, Stephen Eimers, was left grieving after the accident – but things would only get worse.
About four months after the accident that took his daughter’s life, Mr. Eimers got a letter in the mail addressed to Hannah from the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT). Much to her father’s horror, it was actually a $3,000 bill to replace the guardrail that caused his child’s death.
Approximately 15-20 feet of the rail was damaged during the incident, but TDOT wanted to fix about 25 feet instead and was willing to charge a dead girl to get it. “I’m shocked, the audacity,” Mr. Eimers told USA Today.
As for TDOT, they tried to quickly remedy the issue, but the damage was already done. “That was a mistake. It never should have happened,” TDOT spokesperson Mark Nagi said. “We’ll take measures to make sure that never happens again”
Unfortunately, that’s not the only problem. As it turns out, the “Lindsay X-LITE” guardrail model that was involved in Hannah’s accident was removed from the list of TDOT approved products just 1 week before her death. Of course, now we see why after someone died on account of the error.

Although TDOT had stopped installing the guardrails, they didn’t bother to change the ones that they already had in place. As one would imagine, news of the matter was especially upsetting to Mr. Eimers:
“What bothers me is that they’re playing Russian roulette with people’s lives. They know these devices do not perform at high speeds and in situations like my daughter’s accident, but they leave them in place.”
At this point, TDOT is removing the guardrails in order to ensure that this never happens again – but some are saying it’s too little too late. Although more people won’t be injured by this style of guardrail, the fact that officials knew of this danger and decided not to do anything really says a lot. Unfortunately, because of their neglect, a girl is dead.
