Have you ever heard of a black chicken?
If your answer is no, then you may be in for quite a surprise. The black chicken really does exist, and it’s not just black, it’s jet-black. While they aren’t very popular in the U.S., they are native to Indonesia.
Also known as the Ayam Cemani, the black chicken has taken on the rare coloring due to a medical condition called Fibromelanosis. This is also known as hyperpigmentation. Don’t worry though, the color of the chicken doesn’t affect its health, it’s simply an appearance thing.
But, believe it or not, the condition starts to affect the chicken when it is just an embryo. Evidently, extra melanin moves through the bird while it’s still developing. You may have heard of melanin when it comes to tanning in the sun. That is how we get that glowing color in the summer months. As the high dose of melanin moves through the chicken while it’s in the egg, it doesn’t just alter the color of the outside, it also makes the organs, bones, and muscles black. Everything!

These chickens really are beautiful, as the feathers have a specific shine to them. You just need to get past the fact that they look a little different than your average chicken.
You can witness the Ayam Cemani firsthand in the video below. At first appearance the chicken almost looks fake because its coloring is so vivid and it has a shine to it that makes it appear plastic. All parts of the chicken are shown on camera as the handler points out the black feet, black toes, beak, etc. In order to classify it as a Ayam Cemani, you have to make sure that every single part of the chicken is black. The handler even uses his hand to open the chicken’s mouth up to show us that the inside of the mouth and the tongue are both black too. Even the eyes are black which makes it a bit spooky. But, then when you hear the sound this particular chicken, it sounds like he is giggling. It kind of takes away from the scariness of the eyes.
Commenters had a lot of jokes to go along with the video, but they generally found this little guy interesting…
“Beautiful. My mother’s friend has one in her flock.”
“Are they supposed to be full black? this is probably the first time i ever seen a chicken with black colour all over its body.”
“The way that rooster is cock-a-doodling is terrifying. It’s so diabolical hahahaha.”
And everyone seemed to pick up on the hysterical laughing sound he was making…
“And he LAUGHS! How awesome is that?”
“I thought I was the only one who noticed it… sounded like a sicko laugh.”
It would be interesting to find out exactly how rare these chickens are and if they specifically breed them to maintain the different colored species.
We can assume that people would do a double-take if they saw one of these guys walking across the road.
