While finding out that you’re pregnant with twins can be an initial shock, it is also extremely exciting. Picking out two of everything, decorating a nursery with matching cribs, and of course, knowing that your children will always have each other. Twins share a bond that no one else will ever understand, and it’s heartwarming to think of your kids being best friends with one another forever.
For new parents Matthew and Lyndsay Brentlinger, finding out they were going to have twins was a wonderful experience. They had planned to named their newborns William and Reagan, but at 23 weeks into the pregnancy, doctors informed the couple that William would be a stillborn. They detected heart abnormalities in the ultrasound that would cause him not to make it through birth.
While little William did survive the birth, his heart abnormalities were fatal, and doctors feared he would only have about a week to live. With the doctors unable to do anything to help the infant, Lyndsay and Matthew had no choice but to enjoy as much time with William as they could.
The couple contacted professional photographer Lindsey Brown to create an album for the family. While many parents are thrilled to take photos with their brand new babies, it was a bit of a somber occasion for the Brentlingers, as they knew this would be the only photoshoot they’d ever have with their son William.
Lindsey came to the Brentlinger’s home just two days after the couple had contacted her. Even though the family knew they wouldn’t have William in their lives for much longer, the photographer was able to capture beautiful, intimate moments of the twins together as well as the four of them as a family.
They knew that the pictures would eventually keep William’s memory alive forever, and remind them of the magical time when they were able to hold both of their twins in their arms. Little William got to spend 11 days with his parents and twin sister before he passed away. Matthew calls those moments “the happiest 11 days of his life”.
While it is easy to see the photoshoot as a tragic moment for the family, their love for one another shines stronger than the pain. When Reagan is old enough, her parents will be able to show her the photos and tell her all about her baby brother.
It’s so heartbreaking to think about Reagan growing up without her twin brother by her side, but the photo shoot proves that Lyndsay and Matthew will always keep his memory alive. Even though William didn’t get to be on this earth for very long, it is clear that he was truly loved by his parents and twin sister, and that he will never be forgotten.
