Do You Know What The Oven Drawer Is For? Because You're Probably Wrong

Ovens are pretty straightforward kitchen appliances. Sure, there are variations, but for the most part they pretty much run the same.

Almost every oven has that one drawer underneath where most people store pots, pans, cookie sheets, BBQ tools, and whatever else will fit. Everyone has gone through the struggle of pretty much kicking it shut because a handle is in the way causing it to jam.

But what if I told you that drawer isn't meant for storage at all? Get ready to have your mind blown.

For most ovens, that drawer is actually a warming drawer. It's meant as a storage space for food you've already prepared while you make the rest of the meal. For example, keeping the mashed potatoes nice and toasty while the turkey finishes cooking. Or perhaps for a series of hors d'oeuvres for a dinner party you want to make ahead.

You may have noticed when you reach down to get a cookie sheet or a frying pan after the oven has been on that the cookware is pretty warm, and that's why!

These drawers generally have humidity controls, meaning your food won't dry out while it sits there. Plus, it makes it great for warming up bread!

Now, it should be noted that you can't actually COOK in this warming drawer. It's been proven that bacteria can grow at low temperatures, so putting some raw chicken in there to slow cook isn't your best idea.

Of course, you can still use the oven drawer for storage. Just make sure that nothing under there is flammable or meltable! The last thing you need is a cookbook on fire or a puddle of melted spatula.

Did you know this was the purpose of the oven drawer? Let us know!
