Can you remember where you were when you learned that Diana, Princess of Wales, died in a tragic car accident? Though it has been 20 years since her death, that moment of learning the news of her death is still a clear and unforgettable memory for many.
Considering the fact that Princess Diana was the “People’s Princess,” her unexpected death impacted many. Of course, losing their mother has made a lifelong impact on Prince William and Prince Harry as well — probably more than most can know.
They had to begin the process of grieving the loss of their mother at the ages of 15 and 12. Though they were young at the time, they have handled their grief and sense of responsibility to carry out their mother’s legacy incredibly well.

Prince William even assisted in starting a legacy charity called “Stand Up to Bullying” to honor Princess Diana’s legacy. The Kensington Palace released a statement on Jan. 28 explaining another way that Diana’s sons would like to honor their mother.
The brothers requested that a statue of Princess Diana be erected at Kensington Palace. Lady Sarah McCorquodale, Diana’s sister, will be one of six committee members who will decide on the statue’s sculptor as well as privately raise funds for it.
The official statement was jointly written by the Duke of Cambridge and Prince Harry. They said, “It has been twenty years since our mother’s death and the time is right to recognise her positive impact in the UK and around the world with a permanent statue.”

There are currently three monuments in London dedicated to Princess Diana, so this statue will be number four. Some have shared concern over how challenging it will be to properly reflect all that Princess Diana was in the form of a single statue.
Other memorials of Princess Diana have been met with harsh critique. While it will be difficult to adequately reflect her legacy, her sons will make certain that the statue properly honors their mother.
Camilla Tominey, royal editor of the Sunday Express, made an interesting observation about the role that Prince William and Prince Harry’s ages played in their long-term ability to process their mother’s death as well as continue to honor her legacy.

Tominey said, “This is Harry and William saying that want a more permanent and personal memorial to their mother. They were too young when she died to have any role in the memorial.”
We are eager to see the statue created and unveiled. May the statue not only serve as a way for the public to respectfully remember Princess Diana’s life, but may it also fulfill two sons’ desires for a more personal memorial to honor their mother.
