Do You Remember American Bandstand? This Is One Of The Best Performances To Ever Be On It

Over the years, several bands have come and gone, some withstand the test of time and manage to have year after year of success, and others fizzle out as the times change. One group, that may not be easily recognizable for its name, has certain left behind a legacy with some of their hit songs. “The Newbeats,” was originally founded by brothers Dean and Mark Mathis of Shreveport, Louisiana. As young children the two boys were taught guitar by their mother and it didn’t take them long to master several other musical instruments including: piano, bass guitar and drums. The boys both went on to be band members at their high school in Georgia and it didn’t take long for them to make the decision to leave behind their education and pursue careers in the music industry.

While dappling in various bands, the two settled in with the Dale Hawkins’ band, where they stayed for two years. It was with the Dale Hawkins band that they recorded the song “Tell Him No,” which was a duo for the Chessrecord label. After gaining some experience, they went on to start their own eight-piece band, where they played in their hometown of Shreveport, Louisiana.

After recording together for 18 months, the brothers performed jointly and created a demo of a song that was titled “Bread and Butter.” It didn’t take long for the song to reach success, as they were asked to formally record the track just after sending the demo off to Hickory Records.

The song was written by Larry Parks and Jay Turnbow, and became the group’s first hit, reaching #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The band sold over one million copies of the catchy song, which was followed by three more singles in 1964 and 1965. One of the singles that became a hit was “Run, Baby Run (Back Into My Arms), which reached as high as #12 that fall.

While the group eventually dissolved in 1974, their hit song “Bread and Butter,” lives on. And how can it not? As you will witness in the video below, the song is quite catchy. And unlike today’s music, the song is quite innocent, giving it a fun and uplifting vibe.

Watch as the Newbeats perform on American Bandstand in 1964…

The band members are all dressed in proper matching suits, as they move together in synchronized dance steps. The well-known high pitched version of the lyrics comes out when the middle singer breaks out his solo voice, bringing more energy to the song.

The song is basically about what his lover cooks for him. Innocent and clean and something very unheard of in today’s music world.

Commenters agree that the song is uplifting and peppy…

“I LOVE this song! I turned 1 year old in 1964. i listen to it when I’m feeling blah. always peps me up.”

“Rock and roll used to have such fun songs.”

“I love this song but after all these years I was surprised cause I thought the group was Black and and the lead singer was female.”
