His Neighbors Snarked At Him When He Spent $8,300 To Build It, But He Got The Last Laugh

Nearly every part of the country has natural disasters that make our house insurance sky rocket and our fears escalate. If you live in California, you have the added worry of earthquakes and forest fires. If you live in the midwest, there is a good chance that you experience tornados on a regular basis. Just look at Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz. Kansas ran rampant with a tornado that was strong enough to pick up her home and change her life. In the Northeast, there are always blizzards and sometimes hurricanes that keep residents on their toes. And down south there are a whole slew of natural disasters that could interrupt your life for an unnecessary amount of time.
If you live in Texas, you have most likely experienced a flood, as the state leads the nation in the most amount of deaths related to floods every single year. Well, Texas resident Robert Wagner, wasn’t taking a chance on endangering his life and damaging the house that he worked so hard for.

So, instead, he prepared himself for the worst case scenario, much in the same way that a boy scout is prepared when he steps out into the wilderness. When Wagner drove from Texas to Louisiana to purchase a flood barrier, known as an AquaDam, for $8,300, naturally everyone he knew thought that he was crazy. But his family and friends were soon asking him for advice, when they realized that his house was spared from the damage of the flood waters that reached a depth of 27 inches in his hometown of Rosharon.
In the video below, you can witness Wagner’s successful project. While thousands of homes were damaged during the flood, his home was left untouched by the treacherous water fall. Wagner didn’t want to go through having his family evacuated and live in temporary housing while dealing with the stresses of rebuilding his home, so he used his determination to build a successful dam, regardless of what everyone thought of him. Along with two other guys, Wagner made the trip to Louisiana where he purchased forty feet of 30 inch high tubes. He then placed the plastic and fabric tubes around his house, so that they were circling the entire perimeter.
As the flood pummeled the neighborhood, Wagner and his family took cover in their home and watched, as the water rose to 27 inches, never surpassing the barriers and reaching their home.
“The amount of money that I spent to build the dam, is an investment, considering the house could’ve had two feet of water in it and I’d be paying $150,00 in repairs.”
And it looks like Wagner’s investment paid off, as his family is safe and sound, while the rest of the area has been evacuated and lost their homes.
“I was the insane person. Everybody was kinda goin’ by laughing at me,” said Wagner, who now hopes that others will follow in his footsteps and make the investment that ended up saving him a lot of money.
