A Pit Bull Ran Out of His Home to Save a Woman Being Beaten by Her Husband

As Montreal grapples with legislation that bans bulls and "pit bull type" varieties, it is important to remember the story of the brave pup that taught us that not all heroes wear capes — but that some do wear collars. That was true at least for Blitz, a two-year-old, 100-pound pit bull who saved his neighbor on the scariest night of her life in 2009.
Blitz's mom, who chose to stay anonymous, was winding down for bed when she heard screams coming from next door. What she saw when she got outside confirmed the worst: She witnessed Steven Schumacher, 33, beating and dragging her neighbor, his estranged ex-wife, towards his car as she repeatedly screamed "Help me! Help me!"
But before she could leave her house to act, brave Blitz bolted out the door: "He all but knocked me out of the way to get to her." And it was just in time. "He was pretty close to getting her in the car," Blitz's owner said of Schumacher. "My dog spilled past me and went and scared him a little."
Blitz didn't bite Schumacher — his mom maintained that he's never bitten anyone — but his presence was enough for the attacker to loosen his grip on his ex-wife, who then ran inside her neighbor's house to wait for the police.
Schumacher was taken into custody just moments later, where it was discovered that he'd been carrying a knife in his pocket. Captain Rick Walters of the Holland, Michigan Police Department recognized the pivotal role Blitz played in saving his neighbor's life, stating, "It's hard to tell what may or may not have happened if not for that dog."
While Blitz's reaction was necessary at the time, his owner insisted that he reserves that behavior only for emergencies. "He would never do anything unless for a situation like that, if we were in danger," she said. "He'll protect us when we need it, but he's a great house pet. He's great with my kids."
She hoped that Blitz's heroism would help dismantle stigmas around the pit bull breed and open more people up to owning and adopting pit bull pups.
