11-Year-Old Boy Suddenly Dies, Then Dad Makes A Realisation About His Son At His Grave

The bond between a father and his son is incredibly strong, with very little being able to break it. This is a remarkably sad and touching story about the realization a father made while standing by his 11-year-old son’s grave. Be warned, this is quite a sad story, so you may need some tissues to hand.

Kirk Smalley, from Oklahoma, loves his son. He’s told the story of his son’s life and death countless times, but he’s always willing to tell the story again to anyone who will hear it.

The construction worker found himself living every parent’s worst nightmare when his eleven-year-old son took is own life in 2010.

For most people, a young child committing suicide seems strange. They’ve only just started living their lives, why stop? But unfortunately for Ty Smalley, he was exposed to a dark side of the world at a very young age and felt like there was no other choice.

Ty was in sixth grade when he committed suicide, and according to Kirk, was a victim of constant harassment and bullying.

Kirk and his wife repeatedly complained to the school about the level of bullying Ty received at school, and unfortunately received a ‘boys will be boys’ explanation for the bullying. For any parent or anyone who has been a victim of bullying, this is never a good reason for bullying.

Unfortunately, bullying is becoming a bigger problem these days in schools. With the use of social media, a whole new level of bullying has opened up. And unfortunately, suicide related to school bullying is on the rise.  According to Yale University, two out of nine victims of bullying commit suicide. Not only that but on average 4,400 young people commit who are bullying go on to commit suicide.

However, instead of listening to others parents stories about their children committing suicide, Kirk and his wife decided to do something very different. Kirk was visiting Ty’s grave when he decided to do something remarkable. ‘I made my boy a promise,’ Kirk said. ‘I promised him that I was gonna stop bullying in this world.’

Kirk and his wife now spend 300 days out of the year traveling the country and acting as a force of support for children going through the same rough patch their son did. They also talk about the dangers of bullying. They’ve even dipped into their life savings to fund their honorable quest to end bullying.

He does this free of charge and regularly goes into schools to talk about his son Ty and his organization Stand For The Silent. Kirk has talked to over 700,000 students across the country, and he certainly shows no signs of stopping.

Please share Kirk’s incredible story with your friends and family, so we can help Kirk end this epidemic together.
