Make Your Own Glow Stick Nightlight

Now that we’re in the depths of winter, it’s been getting dark pretty early in the evening lately. Energy bills are expensive these days- you may not want to have all the lights in your house on from 4pm until you go to bed and then again in the morning for the couple hours it takes for the sun to come up.

In fact, you may already be experimenting with candles instead, but those can be dangerous to have around unruly children, and there’s always the worry that you may fall asleep while they’re still burning. Nobody wants to worry about catching their house on fire!

If this sounds anything like you, then you’ll love this idea. This mom came up with a really fun idea for adding a little bit of glow to her kids rooms. The supplies for this cool DIY project can be purchased at your local arts and craft or party supply store for less than $10.

All you’ll need is several glass jars or bottles and a couple of packets of kids party glow sticks. As you can see, this mom used mason jars and empty Coca Cola bottles. She simply cleaned each jar thoroughly then put on some gloves and grabbed a pair of scissors.

Picking up one of the glowsticks, she snapped it to get the glowing chemicals flowing. Then, she carefully cut through the end and let the goo drip very generously down the insides of one of the jars. Notice that she spent extra time focusing on getting the glowstick chemical all up and down the sides, and less time on the bottom. Depending on how large your jars and glow sticks are, you may need more than one stick per jar.

Once you’re finished pouring, the jars should already be glowing. Stick some flowers inside to serve as decoration during the lighted hours, and let several of the jars provide a nice muted glow to guide your way in the evening hours.
