Mom places son in shopping cart at grocery store. Next day, he wakes with a 103 degree fever

Vivenne Wardrop is extra-careful when it comes to the health of her youngest son. She tries to avoid exposing him to unfamiliar people and places. When a sudden illness sent Logan to the hospital, his mother realized that a quick trip to the supermarket had nearly killed her baby. Now, Vivienne is warning other parents to sanitize their shopping carts.

According to 7 News, only a day after taking her son to the grocery store, Vivienne noticed that Logan was seriously ill. The ten-month-old toddler was dehydrated, feverish, had diarrhea, and was vomiting continuously. When Logan's condition worsened, his mother rushed him to the hospital, where he spent the next ten days battling a combination of viruses.
Doctors diagnosed Logan with rotavirus, salmonella, and adenovirus. He also contracted meningitis because of the strain on his body. At one point, Logan was admitted to intensive care and his frightened mom wondered if he was going to make it home again. As Vivienne told Kidspot:
"It was terrifying. They were just trying to keep him alive but he was so dehydrated, and his heart rate sat at round 200-220 which is too hard to sustain for days. They had to put a central IV line in as his veins were collapsing because he was so dehydrated."
After coming perilously close to death, Logan recovered—though his mother says that it will take time before her son is back to his old self.
After investigating where the child could have been in contact with the bacterial infection, doctors suspect the grocery store shopping cart.

Vivienne blames herself for not preventing Logan's illness. She told Kidspot that she didn't hesitate to put Logan in the shopping cart, even though, "his hands are always in his mouth," making it easy to ingest any germs on the seat.
She then shared her story on Facebook in the hopes of warning other parents about the hidden danger. She writes:
"Just wanted to warn parents against using baby seats in [a shopping cart] without wiping down or using a blanket.
Didn't even think about it; just popped him in and did a quick shop. I hadn't been anywhere with him in a week so doctors advised [this was the] only place he could of gotten it."
Vivienne says she plans to take her own antibacterial wipes with her from now on. However, she hopes that more stores will make wipes available so that parents can disinfect the cart before putting a vulnerable baby in the seat.

Here are some symptoms to watch out for:
Fever,
headache, and neck stiffness
Irritation,
lack of appetite, or inactivity
She tells Kidspot that Logan's illness isn't the store's fault, but that parents should know about the risks and do what's necessary to protect their children:
“I don’t blame the store because so many people go shopping after not washing their hands after coughing, going to toilet, or eating food. But it is my responsibility as a parent to take all the precautions I can to ensure this kind of thing doesn’t happen again."
After the heartbreaking incident with her son, Vivienne knew she just had to warn other parents about it. Share this to get the word out about this hidden danger.
