Like many other parents on social media, Lindsay Rhoades shared a photo of her daughter’s first day of kindergarten with a message of how much she loves her little girl. The photo was taken in the typical setting at the front door, but it captured something else in the shot that viewers weren’t expecting to see, and it has now gone viral because of it.

The much anticipated first day of elementary school had finally arrived for little Kate Rhoades, who was very excited for this moment. When it came time to say goodbye, Lindsay snapped the keepsake shot to document her big day when she noticed that there was something missing. Looking at the picture, she wasn’t filled with joy for this moment like she should have been when she saw something else that no parent should ever have to face.
Kate should have started school this week with all of the other kids, but she didn’t get the chance since she died a few months before making it to this milestone. The little girl who loved life spoke frequently about how much she enjoyed preschool and couldn’t wait for kindergarten, but she was robbed of that opportunity when she was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, which ultimately claimed her life. For Lindsay, they first day of school was a reminder that her daughter was gone, but she shared this empty doorstep photo with an important message.

“Kate should be starting kindergarten today. She should have been dropped off this morning with a new backpack full of supplies a cute new outfit on…and a bow in her hair,” the mourning mother wrote on her social media site dedicated to Kate’s cause. In place of Kate, for her first day of school picture, is a yellow ribbon on the family’s front door representing childhood cancer.
“Childhood cancer took that right away from my little girl. It stole the opportunity of a lifetime of learning, starting right here, today,” she added, along with a message that maybe she could have been standing there had the government funded childhood cancer research even a fraction of the amount that the other forms of the disease are given.
“Our government has failed kids like Kate,” Lindsay said. “We’re not asking for any more than our piece of the pie.” According to ABC News, of all of the federal funding for cancer research, only a minuscule 4 percent is solely allocated to childhood cancer research. For parents who lost their little one to this disease, they are left to wonder if they would still be raising their child had more funds been given to find cures for kids suffering and dying from the disease.
It’s impossible to fathom the loss a child, knowing that there were ways it may have been prevented. There is so much wasted federal funding going to meaningless studies that have no importance in society and certainly don’t affect Americans the way cancer does. If those finances were allocated to research that matter, lives would be saved, and Kate could be in this picture.
