Mom Shocked By What Teen Is Doing Behind Terrified Elderly Woman

While shopping at the mall with her two young children and grandmother in tow, an Indiana mother had just stepped off the escalator when she realized her elderly relative wasn’t with her. She looked up at the stairs and noticed she was still near the top when she saw a teen behind her grandmother and was shocked by what he was doing behind her.
Leah Kerr said she had become so distracted with her two little girls on the escalator and hands full of bags that she didn’t realize what was happening with her grandmother until she got to the bottom and saw that the elderly woman was still trying to make her way down. As Leah waited at the bottom, she watched her grandmother ride down with a terrified look on her face and then realized what was going on.

Afraid of losing her footing and tumbling down the moving staircase, Leah’s grandmother was unstable, which was apparently a nuisance to other shoppers in a rush to get past her. “I didn’t realize until I stepped on that grandma was too scared to get on — I felt horrible as I watched her try again and again to get her footing right,” Leah explained in a social media post about the incident that she felt she needed to share because of what transpired after this point.

“People walked around her, pushed by her or asked her to step to the side — until this amazing man saw her,” Leah recalled. As the woman held tightly onto the railing, hoping to stay sturdy while others bulldozed past her, a young black man came up behind her and stopped. While nobody else could be bothered with her obvious insecurity on the stairs, this kid took the time to help her out by holding her hand so she felt safe.
“Not only was he not ashamed to help her, but held her hand the entire way down and helped her off,” Leah said, impressed that this teen made a choice to do this on his own. He didn’t see skin color or age difference, and he didn’t care that she was a stranger. He saw a frail woman who was scared of falling, and he decided to be her support as everyone else pushed by.
After the picture went viral, some people recognized the boy and identified him as Alujwyon Williams, 19, of Fort Wayne.
“I didn’t think me being myself would get so much recognition. Thank you all for that and it really was my pleasure. I’m happy to be a part of a touching story,” Williams wrote.
