Parents are always reminding their kids of ways to stay safe when the weather gets warmer; we make sure they’re wearing shoes, we spray them down with sunscreen and bug spray and we teach them the dangers of playing too close to a fire pit. But the one thing no one ever thinks about are the dangers of using old barbecue tools.
It was a gorgeous day out as Nadia Fiore and her family made preparations for a relaxing outdoor summer barbecue. Everyone was looking forward to tasting their burgers which were slowly cooking on the grill.
Nadia knew her son, Anthony, couldn’t wait to sink his teeth into a delicious burger so she made sure he was the first to get one. But the moment he swallowed his first bite, the look of joy on his face quickly turned to horror.
Anthony told her that he felt something pricking him in his throat, like a needle. Terrified, Nadia rushed him to the hospital where they took X-rays.
Doctors could see there was a thin, small object lodged in Anthony’s throat and they instantly knew what it was. The needle turned out to be a broken bristle from an old, worn barbecue brush.
Apparently, this is an all-too-common problem during the warmer months when many people begin to fire up their barbecue grills but forget to replace their well-used barbecue tools. Unfortunately, Anthony was going to require surgery to have the bristle removed from his throat.
The good news is that the operation went well. The bad news is that Anthony developed an infection in his throat from the bacteria-laden bristle.
The brush the family was using was so old that it was covered in germs and was literally falling apart. But they couldn’t have known that using the beat-up brush would put their son in the hospital.
It was a good thing Nadia didn’t waste any time in getting Anthony the medical care he needed. Thankfully, he made a full recovery and now he and his family are warning others to throw out those old barbecue bristle brushes!
