A single mother was desperate to get home to her daughter when she realized that wasn’t going to happen anytime soon. She was searching in her purse for her bus pass and couldn’t find it when a homeless man approached and asked for cash. She said she was stranded and didn’t have any money to give him and now will never be the same after what he did.
Caroline Santana spent the entire day at school and missing her baby daughter as she stood at the bus stop digging through her purse in search of her bus pass. Not seeing it, her only other option was to walk home, a long and dangerous distance in the dark. As she continued to search her belongings, hoping the to find money or that the pass would show up, a homeless man tapped her on the shoulder asking for loose change. She explained her predicament but kindly said she would give him change if she found any.

Seeing how worried this woman was, the homeless man in Brazil had just one question for her. According to Santana’s social media post, without hesitation, the beggar asked her how much the bus fare was. “Do you know how much is the ticket? Because I have $4 and I will be happy to give it to you,” he said to her. However, she couldn’t take all the man had and kindly declined his offer, but he persisted.
Santana continued to dig through her belongings and to her relief, unearthed the bus pass as the homeless man still stood by her side, not leaving until he knew she was safe. Seeing she now had a way to get home, he still insisted that she take the little money he had, just in case the pass didn’t work. “Are you sure you don’t need it? You don’t have to walk back home,” Santana recalled of his response to her declining his offer again.

Touched by his incredible generosity since he had nothing but was so willing to give what was in his pockets to her, Caroline assured him that she would get home safely and there was nothing to worry about. However, she didn’t want his kindness to go unnoticed. She asked if she could take a picture with him so that others could see the “size of his heart.” Ashamed of how he looked, he quickly tried to fix his appearance the best he could, but it wasn’t necessary.
This homeless man’s bright blue eyes and glowing heart made him the most attractive person in Brazil that night, proving that what’s on the inside is what makes you beautiful. Santana found some money in the bottom of her purse while she was in search of the pass and gave it to her new friend, who will likely use it to pay forward the next time he sees an opportunity.
It’s those with the least who tend to give the most because they know what it feels like to be in the struggle. This homeless man may look like he has nothing, but he is richer than the wealthiest man who has a heart of stone since his is made of gold.
