A heartwarming reunion of a family and their beloved dog has sparked joy and festivity, all thanks to an adoption event hosted by Jacksonville's humane society.
Living in Jacksonville, Florida, a family endured the heartache of being separated from their cherished dog, Dopey. The longing for the return of their lovable furry companion persisted as they tirelessly searched for him. Finally, the long-awaited reunion transpired last weekend when their quest to find Dopey resolved – the family came together once more, as the endearing canine was warmly welcomed back into his loving home and embraced by his overjoyed parents.

The Jacksonville Humane Society, a no-kill and non-profit animal shelter servicing located at the Jacksonville, Florida area was able to document the touching reunion between Dopey and his original owners. The family was attending a free adoption event at a nearby PetSmart. On their way to adopt a kitten, the father noticed a dog with familiar spots and colors while leashed.
“That’s my Dopey!” The father exclaimed in excitement.
The dog is more than familiar with the voice that called him. Without a moment of hesitation, Dopey blitz through the crowd and lept into their arms. It was apparent how the delightful canine missed his family. Dopey barraged all the family members with kisses to show them how much he missed the whole gang.
Before the family reunited, Dopey came to the animal shelter as a stray dog on October 1. “His family never lost hope, and they are thrilled that their sweet pup is back home!” The rescue wrote.

“Stories like Dopey’s, the many we tell and the many untold, are proof that generosity…” The Jacksonville Humane Society wrote in their Facebook post. Strangers helped the poor dog when he got lost. Donors, volunteers, and staff, and foundations like PetSmart Charities expressed their love and concern in their own way—concrete proof that generosity and compassion “breed in Jacksonville every day.”
Psychologist Julie Axelrod explains how losing a dog, whether caused by death or prolonged separation can become a painful experience for owners. Axelrod points out that it is not just about losing a pet. She says that owners also lose their source of unconditional love, security, and comfort.
Losing a pet can also disrupt a person’s daily routine and can impact on schedules, plans, and lifestyles. Studies show that separation from pets can be a great source of stress, especially to long-time owners who had high levels of attachment to their companions. Imagine what Dopey’s owners went through before the family reunited.

Dopey’s happy ending is NOT the only reunion story at the Jacksonville Humane Society. It was their annual “Feline Frenzy” event that made it possible for a missing cat to find its worried family. The event conducted by the humane society offered free spay and neuter services for the community.
In the procedure, cats are sedated while the staff checked if the felines in the facility have microchips. Lo and behold, one kitty sleeping peacefully did have one. The humane society called the owners, and it was not that long before the cat reunited with her family after months of being separated.
Indeed, the Jacksonville Humane Society shelter is a place where families find their way to each other.
