Parents are shocked as they learn their toddler shredded over $1000 saved to pay debt

Anyone who’s a sports fan knows that season tickets can be incredibly expensive.

Ben Belnap of Holladay, Utah is a huge college football fan and has always dreamed of having season tickets to see the University of Utah play on Saturdays in the fall. But, as a young husband and father, season tickets just weren’t in the budget.

To Ben’s surprise, his parents gifted him and his wife, Jackee, a full set of season tickets. The young family was so grateful and wanted to pay back the incredibly generous gift.

Ben and Jackee started saving what they could, and after many months finally had $1,060 in cash to give to Ben’s parents the next time they saw each other.

They tucked the money into an envelope and stored it away. When the time came to see Ben’s parents again the money was no where to be found.

They searched every drawer, closet, desk, and box in the house but just could not find it.

Out of all other ideas, Jackee decided to look somewhere that seemed impossible — the shredder. Crestfallen, she found a pile of shredded green paper. Their 2-year-old son, Leo, had found the packet of money and made a game of feeding the shredder.

“So me and my wife had been saving up to pay for our @Utah_Football tickets in cash,” Ben wrote on Twitter. “We pulled our money out yesterday to pay my mom for the season… Well we couldn’t find the envelope until my wife checked the shredder. Yup. 2 year old shredded $1,060.”

Many readers were quick to inform Ben that the U.S. Treasury may be able to help him recover some if not all of his money under something called the Mutilated Currency Redemption Service.

In the meantime, it’s clear that Ben and Jackee may rethink where they store their cold hard cash!
