She was a regular 16-year-old with her whole life ahead of her. She loved spending time with her boyfriend, she loved laughing and having fun with her friends, and above all else, she loved her family.

Unlike many young people, Macy Mathis wasn’t embarrassed to be with her family. Instead, Macy loved nothing more than spending time with them. And maybe that’s why one year before her tragic accident, the poetic teenager started writing secret letters to her mom.

And when her mom, Cindy, found Macy’s handwritten messages a few months after her daughter’s death, she instantly choked up.

Just like that, vibrant young Macy left this world. It was a nightmare that no parent should ever have to experience — to have your child taken from you, replaced by a gaping hole in your heart.

But it was impossible to bring Macy back. She was killed in a car accident. It was unfair and inexplicable, and her mother missed her more than anything.

Cindy just wanted closure — and the days and months after Macy died were the worst in her life.

But then one day, Cindy came across something. Before her daughter left this world, she gave her a priceless gift — 25 letters sealed in envelopes with themes for every occasion.

There were letters for sleepless nights, letters for frustrated days, letters for when her mom was experiencing small everyday problems — all ready to be opened just when they were needed the most. And in that pile, there was a letter that made Cindy freeze up. It was titled “Open when… you miss me.”

Cindy didn’t know how she would react when she opened it. What could her daughter possibly have to say from the other side of the grave? Was Cindy really ready to read these words and get closure?

With shaky hands and her heart beating outside of her chest, Cindy carefully opened the letter. Her daughter had written:

“Hey mommy. I’m sorry that you’re missing me. I hope that wherever you are or whatever you’re doing you’re okay. I’m probably missing you too. I honestly don’t like being away from the house for too long. I get homesick pretty easily. When I was little and lived with Dad, I would look forward to being with you.

I think some of it was because you always had good food at your house, but most of it was because I just missed you so much. I will always and forever love you, Mommy. Thank you for everything you’ve done for me. Macy Mathis”

The letter was just what Cindy needed. She had gone through the toughest months of her life, losing a daughter whom she loved more than anything else. But in the midst of all the sadness and sorrow, this letter let her finally say goodbye. It also showed how special Macy was and how strong the bond between mother and daughter was.

Cindy wiped back the tears. And some time later, she posted the letter on the Facebook page she created to honor her daughter, where she also explained her feelings about the message from the other side of the grave:

“This one was so hard to open. You don’t know how much mommy misses you! There is not a second of the day that goes by and I don’t think of you. You are my rock, my best friend, my everything, ” Macy’s mother writes. “We love you so very much babygirl!! Mommy misses you more than words could ever express! Goodnight my sweet, beautiful angel.”

I can’t help but shed a tear; this hit me right in the heart. No parent should have to go through the pain and sadness of losing a child — but I’m really grateful for Cindy’s sake that at least she got the closure she needed so much.
