Surgeon Prepares For The World's First Womb Transplant For Transgender Women: "This Is The Future"

A New Delhi surgeon claims to be hopeful about a plan for the world's first womb transplant on a transgender woman. Dr. Narendra Kaushik is planning an operation that could help a transgender woman fall pregnant through IVF. The surgeon plans to give the organs of a dead donor to a woman born biologically male so that she may be able to carry a baby. The organs donated by a biological woman who has transitioned to male can also be used for the transplant. If everything goes as planned, this will be the world's first womb transplant on a transgender woman. So far, the risky operation has never been successfully performed, and the womb transplant procedure is still considered experimental.
"Every transgender woman wants to be as female as possible — and that includes being a mother," Dr. Kaushik reportedly told The Mirror. "The way towards this is with a uterine transplant, the same as a kidney or any other transplant." He added, "This is the future. We cannot predict exactly when this will happen but it will happen very soon. We have our plans and we are very very optimistic about this."

Womb transplants are still considered to be an experimental procedure and some even call the procedure "risky." Professor Robert Winston, a leading British medical expert, said, "The problems are huge, it would be a hugely difficult operation," he said. "And you still don't have a functioning cervix or vagina to allow the birth canal. The risk of death to the patient would be very high. Both from the operation to allow the transplantation and also from the pregnancy. It would simply not be ethically acceptable."
According to The Daily Mail, there have been more than 100 uterus transplants between women since 2014. The Mirror pointed out that there has been only one documented case of a transgender woman having a uterus transplant. Sadly, she died from complications just months later. In 1931 a Danish trans artist Lili Elbe was the only person who has been recorded to have had the surgery where a female's reproductive organs have been transplanted into a biological man. The 48-year-old is known to be one of the earliest known gender reassignment patients. Three months later Elbe died from complications of the surgery which included a post-surgery infection and a cardiac arrest three months later. But medicine has advanced drastically since then and many experts believe it is theoretically possible for a trans woman to give birth after a womb transplant. Back in 2017, Dr. Paulson, president of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, said, "There would be additional challenges, but I don’t see any obvious problem that would preclude it. I think it would be possible."
