A husband was desperate to be with his wife to share the moment of bringing their son to this world. However, one thing he didn't let doctors know was that he was exposed to the coronavirus and was experiencing symptoms of the virus that has brought the entire world to a standstill.

Fox News reported and confirmed that the man from New York kept his symptoms a secret in order to be with his expecting wife at the Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, part of the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC).

After his wife gave birth and began showing symptoms of COVID-19, he admitted to staff that he was not only not exposed to the COVID-19 but also had symptoms of his own.

"The mother became symptomatic shortly after delivering. That’s when the significant other admitted his potential exposure and that he was feeling symptomatic," said Chip Partner, a URMC spokesman, as reported by the Democrat and Chronicle.

"The patient in question and her partner were in a private maternity room throughout their hospital stay," Fox News quoted Chip saying. "Both the mother and partner were isolated from other patients.” Chip did not further talk about reasons behind why the husband failed to reveal the symptoms before being allowed to accompany his wife in the maternity ward.

The spokesman mentioned that the staff members of the hospital who came in contact with the couple took the necessary health precautions to get the situation under control. When one of the hospital workers showed symptoms, the employee was quarantined at home. However, the hospital worker's test for the virus later came out as negative.

The hospital also informed the maternity staff about the potential exposure. They continued to work but were told to continuously keep a look-out for symptoms. Throughout their shift, the staff is expected to take regular temperature checks and were told to wear masks at all times.

The husband and wife, along with their newborn baby, were discharged from the hospital. They were told to self-quarantine themselves until their test results came out.

After the outbreak spread across the country, New York has seen a large number of cases and Rochester, which is over 300 miles northwest of New York City was reported to have over half of the cases in the state. Barbara Ficarra, a URMC spokeswoman said, "We have been continually adjusting our procedures and safeguards during this rapidly evolving public health threat."

Following the incident of the husband who did not reveal that he was exposed to the virus and showed symptoms, URMC decided to tighten the precautions taken while allowing visitors into the hospital. Staff would be checking the temperatures of visitors before they enter the hospital and the number of visitors allowed would also be limited, according to the Democrat and Chronicle report.

Since the outbreak, the hospital blocked most visitors to limit the spread, however, exceptions to this were a parent with a child hospitalized, an individual with a loved one close to death, and a partner or doula helping a woman to support women during birth. Following initial screenings, temperature checks were still administered temperature checks every 12 hours while they were inside the hospital premises.

"It was purely an honor system before," said Chip Partner. "Now we're adding the temperature check."

Visitors were also not allowed to leave the visitors side, reports Fox News. Trying to limit the number of patients walking in and out of the hospital, the hospital said, "We recommend utilizing technology to keep in touch with other friends and family during this special time. We will return to regular visiting practices as soon as it is deemed safe to do so."

They also noted that they would try their best to work with visitors who don't have access to such devices to keep in touch with the patients.
