In what is likely to be a devastating blow to ‘Sweethearts’ the world over, one of Valentine's Day’s enduring classics will be gone from the candy aisle this year. After 153 of being the perennial fan favorite, the iconic confection will be conspicuously absent from store shelves in 2019.
Necco Candy Company, makers of the beloved Necco Wafers and the best-selling ‘Sweethearts’ conversation hearts closed its doors this year after suffering economic setbacks in the highly-competitive candy market.
The sad development means that lifelong fans of the company's products have been forced to say goodbye to a nostalgic part of nearly everyone's childhood - an experience that will now remain only in sweet memories.
Even though Necco closed its doors forever, there is some good news. Another company did step in to buy the fledgling business. But, as they say, timing is everything - The move came too late to save this year’s crop of their world-famous Valentine's Day treat.
"Necco, the company that makes the themed candies, faced closure and had to file for bankruptcy in March 2018 until Spangler Candy Company stepped in to save them.
“Spangler bought NECCO Wafers, the company that formerly produced Sweethearts, in 2018 when it went out of business and closed its factory.
“Sweethearts were the most popular Valentine's candy in the U.S. in 2018," according to CandyStore.com.ut. Apparently, that wasn’t enough to save the company from filing bankruptcy, though.
While candy-lovers everywhere can rejoice that their favorite sweet treats have been saved from extinction, the turn-of-events isn't all good news. The timing of the buyout wasn’t favorable to the upcoming Valentine’s Day holiday.
In a press release issued this month, Spangler announced that it is having difficulties getting the manufacturing process up and running in their new acquisition, which will impact their ability to get some of their products on store shelves in the very near future.
Instead, with a promise that next year will bring the beloved candies back, Spangler had to announce that their conversation hearts, as well as Necco Wafers, will not be available for the rest of this year.
“The conversational #sweethearts candy will not be on shelves for #ValentinesDay for the first time in 153 years. Necco closed its doors and Spangler Candy Company says there's not enough time to make them this season.“
In an attempt to soften the blow of this year's 'Sweethearts' shortage, the company sent out an encouraging message to its customers. With it came a solemn promise that the manufacturing problem will be short-lived.
They are working hard to get everything up to standards so that 2019 will be the only year that Valentine' Day will not see the faithful presence of the delectable delights know as 'Sweethearts.'
“We look forward to announcing the Sweethearts relaunch for the 2020 Valentine season,” according to a Spangler press release.
