The devastation of the harsh California fires have let both humans and animals hurt and dead. One family dog survived a fire in Paradise, California once the family left their home and left the dog to survive on its own. Ella the border went against all odds, was alone and was found at the same home that has burned down. It was the only home still standing in the neighborhood.
The owners, Mike and Leahna Copsey, and their daughters, Clarisa and Emma, left as the harsh fires began on November 8. Because their car was stuff full of their belonging, they had no choice but to leave Ella behind.
The dog was found alive two days later, but badly burned and understandably frightened by the harrowing situation she was left in. She was discovered guarding another resident’s home.
Leahna told the Visalia Times-Delta that they were certain Ella wouldn’t survive, but were so relieved to get a phone call from a family friend who said the dog was alive.
She explained that Ella “was protecting the only house left on the block,” with her daughter, Clarisa sharing: “She’s a really good dog… so I was really relieved she was alive.”
The family traveled to Lake County, about two hours away, to escape the fire. Their dog is being cared for by the couple’s oldest daughter, Kayla, as they rebuild all that they lost in the fire.
Kayla set up a GoFundMe campaign to help pay for Ella’s medical bills, writing: “It’s definitely an odd feeling asking for financial help. And amongst the thousands of others that need help as well; my family and I are there too. Like many other animals that have been affected by the Camp Fire, Ella is one of them.”
She added: “After going through the fire we are very lucky to have her back with us. And while vet bills have already been discounted for fire victims, it’s still adding up quickly. Already spending $250, any little bit helps for the future visits we will be making.”
The Butte Humane Society provided food, a crate and toys for Ella.
Among the many comments left on the Daily Mail’s coverage of the story were those who were completely shocked that anyone would leave a family pet behind in a fire. One person noted: “Before I left our two pups, I would dump some of that useless junk out of the car. That pup needs a loving family not one that doesn’t care what happens.”
Others questioned the family’s priorities, as one person commented: “So, they had room in their car for their belongings but not for their dog? They left it behind to burn to death? How can anyone leave a dog behind? Selfish people.”
Another commenter wondered: “Why didn’t they bring her? They don’t deserve her. She deserves to go to a home where she’s treated like family.”
The general consensus was that room could have been made to include their furry family member in their evacuation plan, as one person noted: “You MAKE room for your other family members. Toss a suitcase out. That junk is replaceable. Pets are not.”
