According to Fox News, Hefford died after consuming too much protein. Her altered dietary regimen consisted of protein shakes, supplements, and protein-rich foods. The 25-year-old bodybuilder was found unconscious in her apartment in West Australia on June 19, 2017. She was rushed to the hospital where doctors declared her brain-dead. Sadly, two days later, Hefford passed away.
Doctors said Hefford was unaware that she had a rare genetic disorder that stopped her body from properly breaking down the protein. Urea cycle disorder, which affects one in 8,000 people, caused a build-up of ammonia in her blood and accumulation of fluid in her brain. When Hefford arrived at Fiona Stanley Hospital, medical staff could not at first understand why such a fit woman was losing brain activity so quickly. Her disorder was not discovered for two days.
Her death certificate lists “intake of bodybuilding supplements” as one of the causes of death, as well as the previously undiagnosed disorder. Her family is now calling for tighter restrictions on the dietary supplements industry and for warnings about high-protein diets.
Her mother, Michelle White, said that Meegan had ramped up her gym sessions and gone on a strict diet months ago in preparation for a competition in September. She added that her daughter was studying paramedicine at Edith Cowan Universtiy while she worked part-time at Princess Margaret Hospital in telecommunications.
