4 Symptoms The Body Shows If You're Eating Too Much Salt

Hypertension or also known as high blood pressure is often cause by increased consumption of salt. However, this is not the only health issue that is caused by eating too much sodium. There are other negative effects which can be prevented if you keep track of how much salt you consume. These are the 4 most common symptoms that you are eating too much salt.

Frequent urination

The need to urinate often usually comes after drinking plenty of water. Did you know that the same happens when you eat too much salt? Consuming lots of salt makes the kidneys work overtime in order to remove it from the body which results in frequent urination.

Persistent headaches

The BMJ recently published a study that included adults who ate 3,500 mg of sodium every day and adults who took only 1,500 mg. Those who got the larger amount suffered more frequently from headaches then those who took less salt. High blood pressure and headaches are closely related. This study discovered that people who eat too much salt increase their risk of suffering from headaches more often even if their blood pressure levels are normal. So, next time you have an unbearable headache try cutting back on the salt because that could be causing it.

Constant thirst

Salt makes the mouth dry. When you eat a salty meal the body starts to feel the imbalance of the water and sodium levels. Drinking water is the best way to return these things back to normal.

Brain fog

As we already mentioned the link between water and sodium, eating too much salt dehydrates the body. Dehydration affects the ability of the brain to think clearly, it leads to poor memory, concentration and reaction time and it also affects the cognitive function.
How to fix issues caused by excess salt:

The best ways to battle problems caused by sodium is to reduce the intake of processed foods and to drink more water. This way the body is able to stay balanced and go back to normal. Once you normalize the sodium levels try to keep them under control. The recommended daily intake of sodium is less than 2,300 mg.
