They Were Told Not To Get Married To Each Other. See Their Journey Now, 25 Years Later
By Dreamer

When two people love each other, they must do what it takes to be together. The story of my romance with my wife was like a movie. When we first met, we lived in different cities four hours apart. And her family did not want her to be with me. But our love was too strong for us to be apart and despite the critics, we continued to work to be together, and now we share a beautiful life as a family.
When Kris Scharoun and Paul DeForget first met, they felt a romantic spark, unlike anything that had ever felt in their lives. They met while at a dance, and it was Kris who found the courage to approach Paul and ask him to dance. From that day on, they decided that nothing could stand in the way of them getting together.

But their families did not support their union. Because both Kris and Paul had Down syndrome, the lovers’ critics thought their marriage would be a failed experiment. They could not understand how these two people, who on the surface appeared to be different from “normal” people, could love each other and be dedicated to each other like they needed to be to have a successful marriage.
Kris and Paul did not listen to their critics. They knew their love was real. And they knew they wanted to be with each other until the day they die. So they tied the knot and have been enjoying each other’s company ever since.
It has been twenty-five years since Kris and Paul married. And now they are still going strong.
Kris, 58, and Paul, 54, continue to create memories with each other every day.

Although most of the couple’s family did not support their union, they did have one champion throughout it all. It was Kris’s sister, Susan Shcaroun, who helped them plan their wedding twenty-five years ago. She could tell that the love Kris and Paul had for each other was unconditional and true. During the couple’s recent vow renewal ceremony, it was Susan who was there to cheer the couple on once more.
Unfortunately, the vow renewal was not an entirely happy circumstance. It occurred in the chapel of a local hospital where Kris was fighting for her life against pneumonia. Fortunately, she pulled through.
Besides Down syndrome, both Paul and Kris have other health issues. For example, Paul was diagnosed with dementia and has since been moved into a special care home where he can get the help he needs. Kris, who has type 1 diabetes, visits him regularly and has not waned in her love for her husband.
Susan believes that Paul and Kris might have the longest marriage of any two people with Down syndrome. She wants the public to know that although they were born different, their love is as real and as true as anyone else’s.
In the video below, you can learn more about Kris and Paul’s life together. It is a heartwarming journey and a true love story.
