The school season is showing its face once again and now is the best time to get kids ready for the new school year. This means new clothes, new supplies, new everything. Everything a child will need to get their school year started right.
However, there are some products that you may want to beware of. A recent study has revealed that there have been dangerous ingredients inside of some of our most popular back-to-school supplies.

CNN made a post that states, "Parents may want to take a second look at their back-to-school supplies this season, as a report has found traces of asbestos, lead and other dangerous chemicals in popular school supplies."
But which products are these, which ones are safe and how was this discovered? Keep scrolling down to learn more about this potentially harmful discovery.
How It Was Found
The US Public Interest Research Group Education Fund states, "U.S. PIRG Education Fund tested dozens of school supplies including markers, crayons, dry erase markers, glue, 3-ring binders, spiral notebooks, lunchboxes and water bottles. We found several supplies containing asbestos, lead, benzene and other dangerous chemicals.

As you may know, these are NOT good for children to be around. Even trace amounts of asbestos alone can lead to some pretty harmful side effects including lung cancer and mesothelioma.
Products to Avoid
Here is a list of the brands to avoid with their corresponding contaminate:
Playsckool Crayons sold at Dollar Tree due to "trace amounts of asbestos."
Base Brands Children's Reduce Hydro Pro Furry Friends water bottle sold at Costco, as well as GSI Outdoor (formally sold by L.L. Bean), due to high levels of lead contamination. Lead can lead to "severe developmental and behavioral problems."
Jot brand blue 3-ring binder due to high levels of phthalates. "High levels of phthalates can lead to birth defects, hyperactivity, and reproductive problems."
Board Dudes brand markers due to benzene. "Benzene is a known carcinogen linked to leukemia, and disruptions in sexual reproduction and liver, kidney and immune system function."

What You Can DO!
Kara Cook-Schultz, U.S. PIRG Education Fund Toxics Director had this to say about the recalls in school supplies, "Based on our testing, we know that most manufacturers make safe school supplies. We’re calling on the makers of unsafe products to get rid of toxic chemicals and protect American schoolchildren."
Please avoid buying these products this year. We wish you all a happy and safe school year!
