During our time, we have come to trust technology companies with our personal information. We save our credit card data with our favorite retailers and even in our internet browser. This makes it easier for us to shop online, but it also makes it easier for an identity thief to steal our personal information. Although we trust tech companies like Facebook and Twitter with a lot of our info, we are learning that they’re not as careful with our vital information as we thought.

The same goes for some of your favorite apps on your phone. They might be taking advantage of your habits and data like you wouldn’t believe. In mid-March, Google released its fourth annual Android Security 2017 Year in Review report. And you’ll be stunned at the findings.

Within the extensive report, you should learn about how Google identified 60.3 percent of Potentially Harmful Apps or PHAs through machine learning. Google uses their service called Google Play Protect to scan some two billion Android devices and apps for malicious activity. Because Google has a lot of experience fending off malicious software, they use their learning and an array of tools to keep people’s devices clean and clear of this harmful stuff.

For Google, machine learning has been instrumental in locating and eradicating PHAs. This breakthrough technology accounted for finding the majority of these harmful programs.

Google Play Protect is not new. But in October 2017, Google optimized the service and turned it toward the mission of finding potentially harmful apps even when it is offline. Although Google is fighting to stay on top of security, people continue to create malicious software intent on stealing people’s data and personal information. If you’re eager to stay safe while using your devices, stay clear of these potentially malicious apps.

Draw Something Free

Positioned as a remove version of Pictionary, this app uses the “read phone status and identity” permission. Then it invites advertisers to pay them money and gives them your phone number, call log, and other information so they can target you for their products. Creepy.

Good Weather App

This weather app has been weaponized. It has become a Trojan which infects your device with malware. This code can interfere with your text messaging and even intercept texts.

GO Locker

Although this app promises security, it needs all your information to operate. And then they send that data to unsecured app stores.

Clean Master

This app clears you cache which can speed up your device. But some cleaning apps insert adware into your phone or tablet. Even if they’re not bad for your device, they drain battery power and life over time.

Camera360

Offering more camera modes, this is a popular app among Millennials. It gathers a lot of information and uses a Chinese search engine instead of Google.

Flashlight apps

Computer hackers like to create flashlight apps to infect devices. The dangerous ones to avoid include LED Flashlight, Brightest LED Flashlight-Pro, Cool Flashlight, and Brightest Flashlight.

Do you use any of these potentially harmful apps?
