Ever Notice Someone With A Major Sunburn Such As This? Inform Them Of This Immediately

Unless you meticulously apply sunscreen and re-apply it throughout the day during your summer activities, you face a good chance of getting a sunburn. It’s a dreaded byproduct of those sunny days, with a slight sunburn typically being little more than a bit of a nuisance, but still unhealthy. For a more intense burn, however, it can be hot, painful, and become itchy and start to peel. What’s the best course of treatment when you get a sunburn?

The first line of defense, of course, is prevention. Yes, putting on sunscreen is a bit of a chore and then faithfully re-applying it can be a hassle, but the SPF protection will save your from a nasty burn. Keep in mind that one ounce of SPF 30 or higher is required to cover your entire body and it should be applied at least 15 minutes before you go outside. Once you’re in the sun, you will want to reapply it every two hours and, if you have been swimming or sweating, dry off and re-apply again.

With that PSA out of the way, there are other things to keep in mind to soothe your skin should you suffer a sunburn.

Wear loose clothing to keep the burned skin from getting irritated, choosing flowing and breathable cotton items versus clothing that’s too tight and may cause rubbing or chafing.

Go with all natural remedies to help ease the discomfort of a burn, such as all-natural, unscented aloe, or take an oatmeal bath, apply pureed cucumber, or rub milk onto the burn. All of these will help with providing cooling relief.

Make sure you’re drinking plenty of water, at least eight ounces a day, and eating healthy foods because a healthy body will heal faster than a dehydrated one.

Take pain relief, either ibuprofen or naprox, to help with the discomfort and inflammation or you might want to apply cortisone cream. In severe cases, where you have nausea, a fever, headache, dehydration, or blistering, you should seek medical attention from a doctor.

Don’t peel or pop your sunburned skin since you want the skin to heal itself and be back in top form — popping and peeling impedes the process and can be irritating to the sensitive burned area.

Be informed about any medication or topical creams you use as some medications can make skin more sensitive to the sun and, as a result, more likely to burn.

Of course, staying out of the sun between the prime hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when the sun’s rays are the strongest, is always a good bet, as is wearing protective clothing, such as long sleeved shirts and long pants, or at least wearing a t-shirt or beach coverup over a swimsuit, and sporting an oversized hat. You can also seek shady spots when at a park or, if you’re at the beach, pack an umbrella or portable beach tent to provide shelter from the sun.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDCP) website notes that “the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays can damage your skin in as little as 15 minutes.”
