Each year money is spent on medicine that is supposed to keep us healthy and combat drugs. However, there are many times where we have to reach into the refrigerator drawers to find the key to health. Believe it or not, the onion is home to a whole lot of health benefits. They are filled with natural ingredients that work as healing properties and they’ve been used for years to fight off and prevent illness.
The onion got its claim to fame as a healing vegetable as far back as the early 1900s, when it was used by Europeans to limit complications presented as a result of the plague. For years it has been used by those who practice Ayurvedic medicine as a way to cure colds, the flu, joint pain, inflammation, and coughs.
Its magic ingredient is sulfuric compounds which have been successful at detoxifying the liver and reducing the risk of cancer. Red onions especially are rich in an antioxidant called quercetin, which lowers cholesterol, prevents blood clots, fights diabetes, asthma and other chronic breathing conditions.
One of the best ways to ward off illnesses is to place a cut up onion in a bowl and set it on your nightstand, or in other areas of the house that you frequent. The Amish started this tradition in the 16th century and its success still proves to stand true. The potent-smelling vegetable soaks up the harmful toxins, organisms, and pollutants in the air that you are exposed to on a daily basis, and in turn, gives your health a better chance.
While any variety of onion will do, it’s best to stick with the white one. All you have to do is cut the onion in half, and place in your home to stop those pathogens from entering your body.
If you notice the onion turning brown, this simply means that you are witnessing it work its magic, and the change in color is proof that it is soaking up the harmful particles that are airborne.
While everyone can agree that the onion technique works, its still unclear how long you should leave the onion out, and some say a few days while others say up to three months.
This is really one of those methods to try where you’ve got nothing to lose. Sure, your house may smell like onions a bit but there’s nothing wrong with that and at least you will be heading in the right direction to clear your sinuses and rid your life of unnecessary toxins.
Believers in the onion method have shared that it has gotten them through the cold and flu seasons free of any illnesses. There is also hope that because it clears out your sinuses, that it can benefit you doing allergy season as well and if you sleep with an onion by your bed every night, you are more likely to wake up without feeling congested.
So, when you are at the grocery store this week you might want to consider buying an extra onion.
