By Michele

At least 2,091 students, teachers and staff connected to several schools have been sickened by the gastrointestinal illness, Yolo County Public Health Public Information Officer Beth Gabor said.
Gabor said the health department has received more calls concerning sick students.
Just Monday, officials said there were at least 1,001 cases of norovirus.
“The number of sick people is increasing every day at a very alarming rate,” Gabor last week said.
Forty out of 65 public schools in the county are affected. The school districts impacted by the stomach virus are:
Davis Joint Unified School District Esparto Unified School District Washington Unified School District Woodland Joint Unified School District Winters Joint Unified School District University of California, Davis
The Sacramento City Unified School District confirmed that students and staff at 29 schools have experienced symptoms of norovirus as well, officials said.
Although the district has not confirmed an official case of norovirus, 150 to 200 people in these schools experienced symptoms of the virus like vomiting, stomach cramps and/or diarrhea.
"Our very first case was some cousins that played with some children in Elverta," Sacramento City Unified School District lead nurse Terri Fox said. "But the rest of the cases are really random and there is no connection."

They are encouraging all residents to take precautions to not only avoid, but to not spread the virus if they are contaminated. Dr. Ron Chapman, who is Yolo County’s Public Health Officer, released a statement urging all residents with any type of nausea, vomiting or stomach pain to stay in their homes up until 48 hours after the symptoms have subsided.
It was also released that the number of sick people is only continuing to rise. This is being considered a full on outbreak and is HIGHLY contagious.
The warning says that close contact with an infected person or even touching surfaces that they have touched can spread the virus. Residents are being urged to take this very seriously and do everything they can to disinfect and hopefully prevent further cases of the infection…
“The number of sick people is increasing every day at a very alarming rate,” the release continues. “The outbreak has been identified and confirmed by specimen testing to be the norovirus which is highly contagious. norovirus commonly spreads through touching surfaces contaminated with the virus, close contact with someone who is infected or eating contaminated food or drink.”
Symptoms -- which can last between 1 to 3 days -- include fever, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and stomach pain, health officials said.
There are no medications or antibiotics that treat norovirus, but some people require hospitalization for IV fluids.
