A mother in Alabama is facing sharp criticism from other parents after she filmed her daughter being attacked by a kangaroo at the zoo.
According to The Atlanta Journal Constitution, Jennifer White decided to surprise her two daughters, ages 3 and 9, with a trip to the Harmony Park Safari in the New Hope community just south of Huntsville.
While speaking with WAFF, White said she and her family had been to the zoo multiple times and never had any problems before.
But the family’s latest trip to the zoo was the very first time White had taken her kids to see the kangaroos.
“You blame yourself sometimes, like, you know, ‘Why did I take her to the park that day?’” a tearful White told the news station. “‘Why did I take her to see the kangaroo?’”
According to reports, the kangaroo enclosure inside the park is a drive-thru area where visitors can drive up to the animals and walk around.
In a cell phone recording, White reportedly began filming the kangaroos inside the enclosure, showing an opening in which they could poke their heads through.
That’s when she noticed that one of the kangaroos had started “playing” with her 9-year-old daughter, mirroring the little girl’s movements.
“I thought it was playing,” White’s daughter, Cheyenne, told WAFF.
The video reportedly shows Cheyenne’s little sister reaching through the enclosure, though Cheyenne kept her hands to herself.
Then, suddenly, the vicious kangaroo reportedly grabbed Cheyenne by the hair and began attacking her, even biting her on the head.
Cheyenne had to be rushed out of the park for medical attention and ultimately had to get 14 stitches in her head.
“I’m just glad that it got me instead of my baby sister, because it would have hurt her even worse,” Cheyenne told WAFF.
The safari owners have refused to comment on the accident, but there are reportedly signs posted throughout the kangaroo enclosure warning that the animals bite.
While White doesn’t want other families to stop visiting the zoo, she does hope her daughter’s story can warn others to be extra cautious during their next visit.
“I don’t want it to happen to someone else’s kid, because they may not be as fortunate as my daughter was,” White said.
Meanwhile, several news outlets have since shared this story on Facebook, where many commenters wondered why White hadn’t dropped her phone the moment she saw that her daughter needed help.
“Why, as a mother, would you not put your phone down and help your child?!” one woman commented.
“I feel bad for the child, I do but instead of videoing the whole thing how about you put down the phone and help her!? There's also signs around the barrier that says "I bite" ...” another added.
