Family Renovates Home, Stunned By 72-Year-Old Discovery Hidden In Stairway

A family from New Jersey had recently bought a new home and decided to do some minor renovations. While upgrading their stairway to the attic, they were left stunned to make a 72-year-old discovery that had remained hidden until now.
After Melissa Fahy and her husband recently purchased a new home, she and her father, Al Cook, were doing some renovations when they discovered a love letter that had been preserved for 72 long years. Al, who had been the one to find the letter, was baffled when he saw the post date of May 4, 1945. “I reached up and I pulled it out of there,” Al recalled, according to Daily Mail. “You could tell it was old.”

As soon as Melissa saw what her father found, she was stunned. In fact, she called it “a beautifully written letter in a completely different time” and said that it had reminded her of the romances often written about by Nicholas Sparks, a romantic novelist, except this story was true. “When I read it, I just couldn’t believe the love and admiration she had for her husband,” Melissa explained. “It was really sweet to see that long-distance love. You didn’t have texting, you didn’t have email.”

Melissa was so touched that she decided to find the family of the couple and reunite them with the long-lost letter. After just two hours of posting her desperate plea for help on the Westfield Moms Facebook page, members on the page successfully helped track down the couple’s son in California.
Remarkably, the son was able to read his 96-year-old father, Rolf Christofferson, the love letter that he never received on the sixth anniversary of his wife Virginia’s death. In the letter, according to Inside Edition, Virginia wrote, “I just feel happy and proud to be carrying the baby of the person I love most in the world. I really feel as if I have a part of you with me all the time.”
She continued, “You will always be more important to me and the two of us together, alone in each other’s arms, will always be heaven on earth to me. I guess I sound as if I love my husband. Well, I do! I love you Rolf, as I love the warm sun, and that is what you are to my life, the sun about which everything else revolves for me.”

At the time of the letter, Rolf was a sailor in World War II, serving overseas in the Norwegian Navy. The then-pregnant Virginia had been home, longing for the day her and her love would be reunited. It’s a remarkable reminder of a different time when devoted love was more commonly seen and desired.
Although Rolf was never able to read the letter while his wife was alive, there’s no doubt that hearing his loving wife’s words after her death was emotional but also came at the perfect time. It’s amazing to see that something so old has been left hidden inside the home for over seventy years. It reminds us all to love unconditionally because we’re only given one life and that perhaps one day you too could find something so beautiful hidden within the walls of your own home.
