This mother left a glove on top of her preemie baby. The nurses were touched the next day

It was the arrival of her first child, and Yamile Jackson was totally excited! The pregnancy was going well and she couldn’t wait to give birth. In the sixth month, something happened. Pre-eclampsia suddenly occurred. This is a dangerous disorder which causes high blood pressure and other conditions.

Yamile needed to give birth right away in order for both her and the baby to be saved. It would be 12 weeks before the due date. The preemie was delivered and only weighed 2.5 pounds. His first 155 days would need to be spent in ICU.

Every day Yamile spent at her child’s side. Though at night, she had to leave. A painful experience to leave her baby alone in ICU.

Yamile felt he really should be feeling the love of his mother and desperately wanted to hold her baby. How could she accomplish such a thing? It was one night while washing dishes that a rubber glove caught her attention. The weird idea brewed in her head and she needed to know if indeed it would be possible.

With a cloth glove filled with linseed, she went to the hospital the next day. She kept the glove near her body all day, while sitting beside little Zachary. The glove, by now covered with the mom’s scent, was then placed next to Zachary, with the intent that possibly he would have the feeling that she was there with her overnight.

The glove trick worked! The nurses reported the next day how Zachary’s heartbeat and breathing were much more steady, compared to previous nights. The baby slept more sound as well. Yamile called her glove “Zaky” and from that point on would leave the glove with her boy. Finally it would be time for mother and son to go home with one another. But a nurse first pulled them aside, and gave her a surprise.

They actually wondered if she had more gloves as they wanted to try the method with other babies in the ICU. Yamile was more than happy to oblige. She ended up making more than 100 models for the hospital!

“Zakys” suddenly grew in demand. They really seemed to work as they calmed the babies.

Nurtured by Design is now the company that Yamile was compelled to start due to the enormous demand and positive feedback. These babies can now benefit from all the things that Zachary benefited from. Studies have actually shown that babies who will sleep with their parents scent nearby will have the feeling which mimics a hand which in turn will be comforting and soothing. The babies end up becoming calmer, quieter, and suffer from less complications and problems.

Amazing how it all started with one mom who wanted to comfort her son. And to think that the inspiration came from washing dishes! Today Zachary is a healthy teen boy, no doubt very proud of his clever mom!
