In 1992, during the riots in Los Angeles that were sparked due to the acquittal of Los Angeles police officers who brutally beat Rodney King, he famously asked, “People, I just want to say, can’t we all get along?” King’s statement was food for thought back then, and is still a question worth pondering a quarter of a century later in an age where, according to the Pew Research Center, more than half of Americans still think racism is a major problem.
But there is hope. Ayanna Toye Barrows shared a glimpse of what can be when she submitted a photo on Facebook to Love What Matters. Love What Matters shared Barrows’ photo to its audience of more than 3 million Facebook users. The photo features Barrows’ young daughter, who is African-American, and a little boy, who is white, embracing on a beach as the sun sets. Barrows said in the narrative that accompanied the photo that she and her young daughter were enjoying an outing in Myrtle Beach, S.C., when a little boy came up to her daughter. During the interaction, the kids exchanged names and talked about a shark tooth necklace that the boy had that gave him superpowers.
Love What Matters is an organization dedicated to showing images that celebrate love and inspire hope. Based on the more than 10,000 comments that the post has received so far, Barrows’ photo does both.
Facebook user Margie Edwards wrote, “What a better world it would be!!!! brought tears to my eyes. children have a unconditional love until they are taught racism.”
Brenda Muddle echoed Edwards’ sentiment, writing: “When children are taught love, tolerance, compassion, and kindness they share it with the world around them.”
