3rd Grader’s Detention Slip Has Parents Furious – Mom’s Response? “I Refuse To Sign”

Kids end up in school detention for all sorts of reasons, but it’s usually because they’ve been misbehaving. So it can be a little bit surprising when parents refuse to sign a detention slip, or even acknowledge that their child has done something wrong. Does it mean the parents are bad apples, too? Not necessarily.
In this strange tale of red-tape lunacy, it might actually be the teacher that ate a bad apple – she forgot how to be compassionate. Some folks might even say that it was the administrators who were at fault. It appears they blindly ignored a student that was in desperate need of help!
A considerate 3rd grader got caught doing something in the cafeteria that went against the school’s code of conduct. Wolcott Grammar School administrators in Thorton, Illinois noticed that a super sweet boy was trying to do something nice for his buddy during lunch. However instead of praising him for his actions, he was sent directly to detention.
The principal gave the boy a 1-hour prison sentence for his crimes against humanity. They also sent him home with a note, so that his parents would know what he had been up to at school. The detention slip in question has now been seen by thousands on Facebook and Reddit.
“X brought a Lunchable for another student and was sneaky when telling him. X told me he knew he wasn’t supposed to give food to another student.”
So, wait a minute – his “crime” was sharing his food with a starving kid? Well, this boy’s mother, Jennie Iwinski, wasn’t having any of that nonsense! In big, bold letters she wrote – “I refuse to sign.”
Jennie’s son had been coming home hungry every day, and at first she didn’t know why. She made sure to make his lunch every single day. When her concerned son asked her to start packing two Lunchables to take to school, she quickly figured out what was going on.
You’d think that school staff would have noticed that there was a starving boy right under their noses. Jennie’s son certainly took notice, and he selflessly gave up his own lunch so that his friend wouldn’t go hungry.
Perhaps the teacher should have focused on helping the needy student, rather than go the extra mile to punish a kindhearted little angel.
Many parents know that schools have food sharing rules in place to protect kids with allergies. But, instead of talking to his parents, the school instead decided to stick to the “letter of the law” and take take it out on a little boy.
Family friend Lisa Leonard did note that Jennie actually did make sure the other student didn’t have any food allergies.
“Yes even after the mother had checked to make sure the young man didn’t have any allergies and he is a friend of the child.”
This particular school seems to have a history of doling out detention for rather silly reasons. Another detention note shows how Jennie’s son was also punished for starting a math test early. He was apparently “Lying/Cheating.”
Yikes – really?
While we don’t know Wolcott Grammar School’s side of the story, it’s certainly a very sad day when the phrase, “no good deed goes unpunished” actually comes true.
