Man Floored By Note Stranger Put On Door, Then He Saw What Else They Left
By Timfly

A Tennessee man was on his way to work, taking his daily route that goes in front of a stranger’s farmhouse. He’s never stopped to talk to the man who lives there, but on this particular day, he climbed the fence, wrote a note, and left it on the doorstep after what he saw in the yard that didn’t sit well with him.
Don Sargent Sr. said he had been out of town for a few days when he came home and saw the neatly written note waiting there for him, signed by Sgt. David Larew. In Don’s absence, strong winds had swept through the area, leaving a slew of items in his yard. The stranger saw one particular item and decided to hold on to it until he decided what to do. That’s when he returned to Don’s house.

The farmhouse once belonged to Don’s uncle, Theo Dickinson, who was a World War II veteran and Purple Heart recipient. Don has managed the property since 2006, after Theo died, but he has always flown this honorable man’s flag on the farm. Sgt. Larew had no way of knowing the story or the man behind that particular flag, but he was disheartened when he saw “our nations colors on the ground,” as he wrote in the note left on Don’s door, along with something else he had for him.
The flag had come off the pole in the strong winds, when Larew saw it in the field and immediately recovered it, which meant that he had to climb the fence to get it. It was important to this patriot, who saw the disgrace of letting the flag he personally fought to defend, lying damaged in a heap on the ground. He not only picked it up, but the veteran folded it military-style, then purchased a new flag for this homeowner and returned both flags and the note the next day to Don’s house, before he got home from his trip, WKRN reported.

New flag Sgt. Larew left Don
“I was driving by and noticed the flag bold had broke and our nations colors were on the ground,” the note that Don found on top of the flags began. “I have folded the flag and set aside in hopes that you will properly retire her. Please accept this flag in the box as either a temporary or permanent replacement,” the note read. It was signed, “Sgt. Larew U.S. Army 2007-2015.”
Don was overwhelmed with pride when he found the effort this awesome American went through to recover the flag. “He probably didn’t have that new flag with him, so he had to come back and then leave a nice note,” Don told the news station. “It was a moving experience for me. We put the flag pole back up with that flag and it has been flying ever since.”
The level of respect Larew showed for this important symbol of our country is refreshing in a time when so much of what makes America the greatest nation on earth is forgotten. Citizens who enjoy the freedom afforded them, by heroes who went to war for it, are stomping on the flag both physically and figuratively, because they never had to fight for it, like the honorable veterans in this story did.
