BEWARE! New Amazon Scam Is Stealing People's Credit Card Information

A new phishing scam, which aims to steal your identity and financial information, has donned the Amazon logo and used their material to trick you into thinking it’s legitimate.

Recent reports show that Amazon Prime members and regular customers have received fake though official looking emails that appear to come from Amazon. They’re asking customers to “re-enter” their credit card information and in the process, they steal everything they can from you…

According to the AARP blog, the email subject will be something like “Your Amazon.com order cannot be shipped.” They then issue a message like the following:

“Hello, There was a problem processing your order. You will not be able to access your account or place orders with us until we confirm your information. click here to confirm your account. We ask that you not open new accounts as any order you place may be delayed.  For more details, read our Amazon Prime Terms & Conditions.”

Because the scammers need to make you feel worried, they try to put a deadline on their theft. They write the following to get people to think it is a life or death problem with their account: “You will not be able to access your account or place orders with us until we confirm your information.”

They may also try to trick you into thinking someone has gotten into your account and tell you they need to confirm your information.

If you click the link, you are led to a very official looking Amazon landing page.

This phishing site asks you to enter your name, your address, phone number, and your credit card information.

If you get caught by this scam, you would have given over everything needed for the scammers to make unauthorized purchases.

If consumers enter their information, the scammers then redirect them to the real Amazon website. They don’t know they’ve been scammed at all.

Don’t take the bait. Never click a link in your email from Amazon or any retailer. Instead, go to your account and log in. Then go to “Your Orders” to see if there has been a problem.

AARP warns that this is not the only scam screwing people over recent:

“There’s been a recent uptick in a years-old ploy in which DirecTV impostors call existing subscribers and potential new customers, claiming this bogus promotion: By purchasing a $300 Amazon gift card and using it to prepay for services, DirecTV users can get a discounted monthly rate and additional channels. Although DirecTV has promotions that give Amazon or other gift cards to those initiating new service agreements, it does not solicit payment that way. What’s more, Amazon gift cards cannot be used anywhere except on the company’s own website.

“Meanwhile, just weeks ago the Federal Trade Commission busted a telemarketing scheme involving five companies that falsely claimed to be affiliated with Amazon. According to an FTC complaint, the defendants’ telemarketers would falsely tell seniors, veterans and others that for fees up to several thousand dollars, they could create a website linked to Amazon.com to earn thousands per month in commissions for work-at-home sales.”
