Woman Fired Over MEASLY $1.70, What The Money Was For Makes It WORSE

After faithfully coming to work for the past three years without incident, an Idaho woman was left astounded after receiving a letter and reading its contents. After seeing she was fired over a measly dollar and seventy cents, the only thing that makes the scenario worse, is how the money was spent.

The incident took place in Pocatello, Idaho, where Dalene Bowden worked as a cafeteria employee at Irving Middle School. Before being fired, reports indicate that a 12-year-old girl didn’t have the funds for a lunch one day, prompting Dalene to let her get one for free.

However, the innocent and genuinely kind-hearted gesture would soon cost Dalene much more than the $1.70, which the school said she “stole” from them.

After speaking with her managers over the matter, Dalene stated that she would gladly pay the money back, as well as offer the assurance that it would never happen again. Unfortunately, it was to no avail, as the school moved forward with standard disciplinary proceedings.

Despite not having a single disciplinary incident up until that point, you can imagine her surprise when she learned of her termination, as outlined in a letter. According to the document, Dalene was being fired by the Pocatello/Chubbuck School District for “theft of school district property and inaccurate transactions when ordering, receiving and serving food.”

FOX LA further reports, “The school is supposed to notify parents once their child’s lunch bill reaches the limit. Bowden said cafeteria employees are instructed to take a tray away and dump it if the child can’t pay.” Apparently, when it comes to that measly $1.70, the kids are up the creek without a paddle if they want food.

The outraged employee states that she’ll be hiring an attorney to fight her termination. Along with that, several efforts have been launched in her favor, including a Facebook page titled Give Dalene Bowden her job back and a Go Fund Me page to raise funds to help pay for her legal defense.

The school has also spoken out since receiving public backlash, saying that although their school offers discount lunches to low-income families at just 1% lower than the national average, they try to help everyone that applies. Too bad for both this little girl, and now Dalene, it seems that when it comes to either the school’s policy or a child going hungry, policy wins. They can’t even say it’s about the money, since the food will be thrown away.

Hopefully, they see the ridiculousness in their actions and decide to reverse their decision. Now, I know that you can’t do this for every student, but I also believe that there are special circumstances to take into consideration. Seeing how this was Dalene’s first mishap in the years she’s been working there, it would seem that she deserves the benefit of the doubt on this one. Give the woman her job back.
