In Edmonds, Washington, a family is overjoyed to be celebrating a particular day they never thought they’d reach as a unit. What is it? Their daughter’s first birthday.
Last year, when Harper Foy was born into the world, she was covered in thick, scaly, calloused skin. Her doctors didn’t think she would make it because her skin was so thick it actually cut off the circulation of blood to her limbs.
Soon after birth, doctors rushed the infant to the emergency room where she underwent the knife in order to remove the excess skin. Although mom and dad did everything they could to prepare for Harper’s birthday, they didn’t know about the skin condition until her birth. It came as a big shock.
But now they’re celebrating a milestone that every doctor said was impossible. Learn more about this miracle baby below!
When doctors saw her scaly skin, they rushed her to surgery to help her survive. The circulation of her blood was being cut off by the extra skin.
“It was like a thick skin that built up,” mom Angie Foy said, according to ABC News. “It created big thick plaques.”
Harper survived the initial surgery. Soon after the tragic news was discovered, the little baby was diagnosed with the extraordinarily rare skin problem called harlequin ichthyosis.
Because of the sever condition, Harper’s delicate life was never taken for granted. It was possible that she could be gone from the world in a moment.
Her first few months were extremely difficult. Her mom Angie couldn’t bear to lose her baby. And Harper needed to stay in the hospital.
Angie and the baby’s dad along with their two other children who were six and seventeen, came to visit the newborn babe in the hospital every day. Because of the condition and the surgery, Harper contracted several life-threatening infections during those precarious months – and doctors had almost no hope she’d make it home, let alone to her first birthday.
“We didn’t even know if she was going to live,” Foy said.
But Harper made it through. It was a miracle. And now the little girl is thriving. Recently, she celebrated her first birthday on September 20 – a milestone no one thought she’d make.
Because she has ichthyosis, he skin grows rapidly – this is still a constant challenge. Her parents need to take extra precautions but they are extremely grateful to have the newborn girl in their lives.
“She’s the light of our lives,” Foy said.
Because the process of caring with the girl with the skin condition is super expensive, they’ve started a GoFundMe account, asking their family and friends for support. But now even strangers have offered money to help little Harper thrive. To date, the Foys have raised more than $12,000 – which is about half of their goal.
“Harper is our true Miracle Girl. She not only survived two major surgeries within the first week of her life but will now celebrate her 1st birthday in just a few short days!” the family shares on the page.
