Boy With Down Syndrome Rejected by Osh Kosh B’gosh Because They Never “Requested a Special Needs Baby”

Bringing awareness to Down syndrome is always important. As October is Down Syndrome Awareness Month, now is the time to really ramp up that love and awareness, especially when it comes to those special children who have Down syndrome. You’ve likely seen a lot of images going around social media with a whole lot of positive vibes and love.
One adorable child that has been going viral is 16-month-old Asher Nash. His wonderful and playful expressions have been taking the internet by storm! His story has also been going around and unfortunately it is not a positive one.
You see, his mother had sent Asher’s photos out for a casting call for the kids’ clothing company Osh Kosh B’gosh. She was immediately turned away and this is the reason they gave: “the company hadn’t requested a special needs baby.”
(I just rolled my eyes SO HARD. Very professional, I know.)
The kid is adorable whether he’s “special needs” or not, and clearly he has a photographic charisma to him. But Osh Kosh simply can’t get past the Down syndrome part, and they come right out and say it.
The mother isn’t into sending photos out of her son just because he has Down syndrome and feels he shouldn’t be judged on it, and be turned down because of it. Here’s what she had to say:
“I would love for OshKosh to meet my son and see what we see in him. I don’t want them to use him because of this fuss we are making on the Internet. I want them to use him because they value him and see how much he could contribute to their advertisement.”
Grouping kids as kids no matter what their condition or needs are seems like it would be the right way to go. But with marketing campaigns being so out-of-touch and statistic driven, companies are paying big money to these teams who really don’t get it at all.
Let Osh Kosh and all other companies know how out of touch they are by sharing this story with friends and family, especially during Down Syndrome Awareness Month!
