A Virginia boy with autism has been obsessed with vacuums all of his life, so on his birthday this year his mother invited a salesman to do a pitch. Little did they know that they would all be left in shock at what happened while he was there.

Over the weekend, Dylan Johnson turned 14-years-old, and to help him celebrate, his mother Jodie penned a letter to the Kirby Company, a Cleveland-based manufacturer of high-end vacuums. Since Dylan was never into “normal” toys and had been obsessed with vacuums since he was 2, his mother thought it would be the perfect way to celebrate his birthday this year, according to WTVR.

“I am reaching out to you in hopes for an answer to an unusual request for my son who is autistic. He has always been obsessed with vacuum cleaners,” the letter began. “His favorite is the Kirby.”

Jodie explained that Dylan spends hours a day watching videos on his tablet about his favorite vacuums and that it would mean the world if she could get one of their salesman to give him a demo. The dedicated mother even had a Kirby-inspired birthday cake made for her special needs son, so she was requesting the salesman to finish off the vacuum-themed party.

“I want to be clear that I do not intend on purchasing a Kirby,” she continued, then explained she would gladly pay a flat fee for the salesman’s time or would be glad to host someone who needs to get experience with demos.

“I do not want anything free,” she said. “But as the mother of a special needs child, it is so hard to find things to make my son happy. I know that having this demo done would just be so awesome, and it would warm my heart to see him so excited to experience that.”

Kirby received the email, then followed through on making Dylan’s dream come true. They sent him a soccer ball, a hat, and a t-shirt with a Kirby logo on them, and a salesman from their Fredericksburg location drove down to the family’s home to perform a demo at the party.

Salesman Al Archie was the one who went to their home, and while doing his routine, he became impressed with Dylan’s expansive knowledge about the company’s vacuum cleaners.

“I have never experienced anything like that,” he said.

Archie’s been a salesman for Kirby for the last 25 years and said that Dylan’s knowledge was moving. He was also shown pictures of a much younger Dylan dressed up as a vacuum salesman, which he said took him aback.

“I imagine it was like a sports fan meeting one of his idols, like Michael Jordan,” Archie said.

While Archie was surprised at Dylan and his passions for vacuums, he had something up his sleeve that left the family in complete shock.

“At the end of the demonstration [he] gave my son a brand new Kirby vacuum,” Jodie Greene said. “There was not a dry eye in the house.”

According to Archie, the vacuums aren’t cheap. In fact, a quick Internet search finds they retail for over $1,000, making it quite the gift for young Dylan.

Making the gift even more special is the fact that Archie paid for it out-of-pocket. It wasn’t a donation from the company.

“I planned I wanted to do something for him,” Archie said. “[It was] an opportunity to give something back.”

The gift and the person who gave it to him have made Dylan’s year, his mother said.

“I’m going to have the cleanest carpets in Chesterfield County,” she joked.

While a vacuum cleaner may seem trivial to us, for one boy it meant the world. Hat’s off to Mr. Archie for going out of his way for a complete stranger and likely leaving an impression on the young man that he will never forget.
