Cop Stops For Woman Stuck On Rural Road, Had No Clue What He Was In For

In Massachusetts, a police officer had just left the courthouse and was heading down the road, when he saw a woman sitting in the grass on side of the street. He kept on going at first, but he decided to turn around and see what her situation was and whether he could help, without realizing what he was in for.
The Fall River police officer was later identified after the incident as Trooper Luke Bonin, who was spotted by a third-party who happened to pass by the two. Without the cop realizing it, the driver snapped a photo and shared it online later that day. Bonin had no clue that someone had caught what happened — until his department called him for a chat.

The trooper explained the events of that day, starting with driving past this woman, who was panhandling in an area where she wasn’t allowed to be. He kept going, having made a split second decision to make one stop before heading back to where she was at.
Bonin went to an establishment, where he made a purchase, then went back to where the woman was still sitting. As soon as he pulled up, the panhandler knew she was in the wrong for begging there and said she would leave. He told her to keep her seat, that he wasn’t kicking her out. Shocking her with what he really wanted from her, he reached out and offered her two meals that he had just purchased, asking her to pick one.

She graciously accepted his generous offer, picking the lunch that looked the best. Bonin then sat on the bumper of his patrol car and ate lunch with her as he spent time talking and getting to know who she was, just to be a friend to a woman who needed one. It was during their roadside lunch that a driver passed by and snapped a picture of the unusual scene, sharing the photo in an online community group for the area and praising the local police officer.
Bonin didn’t want any attention for it and didn’t think he deserved it. When word got out about what he had done that afternoon and he was prodded for more of the story, he was shy about sharing it. However, his department persisted and created a social media post about his good deed, spreading a message to others that cops aren’t all out to issue tickets and collect a fee or make someone’s day worse than it already is.
Bonin was more concerned about serving his community, even going out of his way to do so, when he thought nobody was looking. He acted surprised to hear that a stranger had snapped a photo, since he had no clue that happened, nor did he expect anything to come of his lunch, other than to make a struggling stranger’s day a little better.
This officer, like many others, is a credit to his profession and an example for us all to follow. He showed that all we have to do to make a difference is to not think of ourselves, but open our eyes and hearts up to other people’s needs. He fed this woman more than just food. She got a much-needed dose of compassion with her lunch, to see someone actually cared and didn’t assume anything negative about her.
