Man Makes Unexpected Find Underneath Back Yard (Photos)

After hearing a few rumors about something hidden close to his home, an Arizona man decided to investigate what was lurking beneath the soil of his back yard. Much to his surprise, he found an odd hatch that had been there all along – and things only got better when he decided to see what was inside.
The incident reportedly took place when Redditor captantarctica moved into a new home in Tucson, Arizona. According to the man, the former owner told him there may be something worth investigating buried in his backyard.

After traveling to the city records building, he was delighted to find plans for an old bomb shelter that had reportedly been buried in his back yard during the 1960’s. With the help of a metal detector, he was able to locate two places where the entrance may have been and decided to start digging

Sure enough, he found the hatch and pried open the heavy lid. You can imagine his surprise to see a spiral staircase still intact, leading to the structure below. Although the entryway was full of dirt and very rusty, he decided to venture down to check things out.

As it turns out, it was a single, dome room shelter that was still in good condition. Knowing what he had to do, the man got to work, cleaning up the room and making the proper renovations to return it to working order again.

Although giving it a good sweep did most of the work, there was still a bit to be done, including repairing the entrance. In just a short amount of time, the man was able to pour a new concrete slab entryway and remove the old, rusty staircase.

Next, he got to work on the inside, removing the fiberglass interior. It seems as though he’s got quite a ways to go with the shelter, but seeing how he began about 6 months ago, I’d say he’s made incredible progress. I don’t know about you, but I would be absolutely thrilled to make such a discovery in my backyard.

Although people still have fallout shelters today, it seems as though this could be a fun addition to someone’s home. More than likely unfit to operate as a real shelter anymore, the possibilities are endless as it could be transformed into just about anything that suits the owner’s interests.
