Woman Recognizes Woman And Child From A News Report, Pulls Over, Takes Swift Action

Thanks to the kindness of a stranger, a Papillion, Nebraska, mother and her second grade son no longer have to walk four miles a day to his school.

Kim Bellus and her son, Gabe, have been walking just under two miles, which takes them 45 minutes, twice a day to and from Carriage Hill Elementary School because Nebraska state law won’t allow school buses to pick up students who live less than four miles from their school.

Kim is a stay-at-home mother and full-time student and cannot afford a car so she and Gabe make the tiring walk together, Opposing Views reports.

“I’m kind of tired," Gabe said of the walks. "I'm really tired when I get back."

Their story was covered by a local news station and one woman who saw the broadcast recognized the two on one of their walks from her vehicle (video below).

“I pulled over and said, 'Ma'am are you just the one from the news?'” Becky Novotny asked.

Kim answered yes, and Novotny decided to help them.

“I took them home. We set up the deal where I’d come get him and drop him off every day so he doesn't have to walk,” Novotny said.

Novotny has a child that attends the same school as Gabe, KMTV reports.

“I’m a stay-at-home mom. I have three kids. If I was in the same situation, I think I want someone to help me,” Novotny said. “It's a small town. You're there for everybody."

Kim greatly appreciates the help from Novotny.

“I had nowhere else to turn. I tried with the school. I tried with the administration. I tried particularly with the school itself, so I greatly appreciate you guys' help,” Kim said.
