When a Connecticut mother walked into the store with a couple of items to return, she was shocked when the clerk looked up from the register and down her nose at the customer. Following a personal assessment of the shopper, the clerk asked a brutally honest question before handing her two pennies, sending the mom storming out.

Jessica Huchko had returned to the Babies “R” Us in Watertown with a purchase she made at the store a week earlier that didn’t end up working out. The simple errand turned into a grossly offensive ordeal when the mother of three girls was unprepared for what the sales associate and her manager had to say.

All Jessica wanted was to get a refund for a stroller and car seat she recently bought but didn’t end up using, but instead she left in tears after the employees were critical about why she was returning them. When she bought the new baby gear, Jessica was excited to get boy-themed items since she and her husband were expecting their first son. Shortly after announcing that they were pregnant with their fourth child and making the original shopping trip, Jessica suffered a miscarriage.

Seeing the new baby items in her home were a painful reminder of the pregnancy loss, so Jessica decided to take them back so she could start to heal that emotional wound. “Every time I would see them, I would either get mad or upset. I needed them out of the house,” Jessica explained to WFSB. What she didn’t realize was that returning them was harder than she thought after a couple of insensitive employees made her feel worse after her miscarriage.

The mother had thrown the receipts away for her baby items, not thinking that she would need them since she never expected that she would lose a baby with how far into her pregnancy she was. Not having the documents was a problem for the clerk who demanded to know why she was trying to return gear. Not prepared to have to explain herself, Jessica started to tear up when she told the employee that her son had passed away. While most people would respond to that heartbreaking answer with kindness, that wasn’t the case here.

The clerk called a manager over who gave the same bad attitude to the mother as the cashier did, forcing Jessica to explain her reason for the return again. The manager insisted that despite her circumstances and the items still being packaged and in perfect condition, she was only refunding her for 50% of the cost of the car seat and only 2 cents for the $179 stroller she brought back.

Jessica was heartbroken all over again, this time at the audacity of these women working in a baby store who had zero kindness in their assumptive remarks about her, even after she explained the loss of her child as the reason for not needing these baby items. Shocked at how she was treated, she took her two pennies home and made a post about what happened on social media, letting other buyers know what they can expect at this huge retail chain.

Babies “R” Us caught wind of her viral post and offered an apology, but it was too little and too late. The company vowed to provide employees with more customer service coaching so that this problem isn’t repeated. It would just behoove Babie’s “R” Us to hire better employees who don’t need training on simply being nice.
