Officer James Morrell
A California Highway Patrolman received a call about a man in the median on his hands and knees. The officer arrived at the scene and was helping the guy in his desperate situation when he saw something out of the corner of his eye that looked familiar.
In all of Officer James Morrell’s time in law enforcement, he’s never received a call for assistance like he did last Saturday night. Passersby were concerned when they saw a man crawling around on his hands and knees in the center divider on Interstate 80. He was speaking with the man identified as John Badial about what he was doing when something caught his eye that he couldn’t ignore.
John had explained to the police officer that earlier in the evening he put his wallet on top of his car and forgot it was there when he drove off. All of his belongings and every dollar to his name flew off of his roof and scattered among the median.

He’s a mechanic and the sole provider for his family that lives very tightly with nothing left over at the end of every paycheck. They sometimes run out of fund before the next payday. He lost $200 that evening which he managed to get back by risking his life in the middle of the road to collect it, but John’s story didn’t end there.

John Badial
James escorted John to safety so he could get some gas in his car and get home to his family. As he was pumping the fuel, the officer saw a cash machine out of the corner of his eye and remembered how he personally grew up. James withdrew $60 from the ATM and gave it to the struggling father out of the kindness of his own heart because he was raised to help people.
“My parents taught me to help everyone in any way that I’m able to do. And that’s again the reason why I got this job,” James told KGO. “I wanted to help everybody.”
John couldn’t believe this officer’s generosity with this random act of kindness that he decided to do on his own goodwill. “I was pretty thankful and got choked up about it because he doesn’t know me from Adam, you know,” the appreciative father said.
James is proof that it takes a special person to be a police officer who has a heart for helping people. Cops are not just on the front lines of crime, they are often the first and most frequent to see a need and assist in ways that are beyond the requirements of their badge. When parents raise their children well, they end up with adults like Officer James Morrell.
