Dressed Up Children Wait To Hear Parents Return Home On Halloween, Instead Hear A Knock On The Door

A Georgia State Patrol Trooper went out of his way to preserve Halloween for a group of kids who had just lost their parents.

Morgan County couple Donald and Crystal Howard were involved in a car accident that took their lives on Halloween. They were on their way to buy face paint and candy when their SUV flew off the road and hit a tree.

Trooper Nathan Bradley was left to break the tragic news to the family.

“Unfortunately, I was greeted by four children in full costumes,” Bradley told King 5 News.

Bradley got the grandmother’s permission to wait to tell the children, who were between ages of 6 and 13, about their parents.

“The first thing I said was, ‘Hey let’s go get something to eat,’” Bradley said.  “They said, ‘My parents will be here soon.’ I said, ‘Your Grandma wants you to hang out with me till she gets here.’”

The trooper treated Justin, Damien, Travion and Amaya to dinner and movies, and gave them candy at the Monroe State Patrol post, where they had a sleepover.

“The whole purpose was to preserve their Halloween,” Bradley said.

The kids weren't told about their parents’ death until the following morning when their grandmother arrived to pick them up.

“It’s the first time in the line of duty I told someone I loved them and I do love them,” Bradley said. “I care about them a lot.”

Bradley didn’t stop there. He set up a GoFundMe page to help the family with funeral expenses. The page has already raised more than $95,000.

Crystal and Donald will be buried in Florida, where the children are moving in with their grandparents.
